lost my best friend

last night i had to put my best friend to sleep. about 2 weeks ago my great dane started limping and we decided to give it a week or so and see if he would get any better. the vet had come to the house on saturday to check him out and give him some pain meds.(can't just pick up a 175lb dog and put him in the car,and he doesn't fit in a wrangler) after seeing no signs of him feeling better we had the vet come back out last night and do x-rays, it was obvious in the x-rays that bone cancer had destroyed his front shoulder and there was no hope of him getting better
i don't know how much harder it can be than looking your best friend in the eyes as he takes his final breath.
Apollo, rest in peace my friend,and thank you for 10 great years. i hope all your pain is gone.

hasn't been that long ago when I had to do the same with my Sphie girl. I feel your pain Lee, sorry for your loss
 
been there man!! @ least you have some great pics to remember him by!!! condolances to you and yours!!
 
Sorry to hear man. I never understood the emotional attachment owners had with their dogs until I bought my Dane, and now I know it would be a struggle to go through the day without her.
 
Sorry to hear. 10 years is a good long life for a Great Dane though they usually don't make it past 6-7.

thanks everyone, unfortunately that is part of being a dog owner. we all know they don't outlive us(or they would be called parrots)
it hurts none the less, but he isn't in pain, and he couldn't have had a better life (except for the fact that they took his testicles as a puppy)

have no fear, his retribution for being neutered was all the chewed up shoes, pillows, and any other mess that usually happened right when you didn't need it too !

They know, and they use it against us. and we fall for it every damn time !
