“It's not that we don't want development. We want to be intentional about who it's for, and that you're actually lifting up the history of the people in Durham,” she added.

What's especially sad is Hayti is/was a success story.

Former slaves who had worked and purchased their independence pre and mid civil war established the community - named after their "home land" where many had been captured and sold (how romantic and idealistic) ...it was the first primarily black business district in NC.
In an era of segregation and true oppression these early leaders overcame and built businesses, their own schools with their own money and labor, even theaters and cultural centers.

It was a beacon for "we can overcome" - now its being turned around to "we cant possibly exist without help"

Dude is 60 years old and hasnt worked in 10 years, assumedly because he won the sweepstakes.He's got 260K a year and couldnt manage to pay for a house in that time?? I know it happens but DAMN!!

I was thinking the same thing. Sure he thought he had a fixed secure income. But I know I would have been diversifying and securing assets with a good bit of that money.
