My prediction: gone in 5 years.

Have you noticed that lately, every time you go in there, that there are less and less building materials, and more space devoted to wimmen stuff....cleaning products, coffee makers, etc.

And what I have run into a lot the past few weeks, on stuff for the new house and shop....something that you might need 20 of....conduit fittings, simpson brackets, etc....they only have 4 or 6 or something on the shelf. I think they are cutting inventory levels on purpose.

when we submitted products to lowes for the shelf, they told us: we want multiple versions, vibrant labeling, and low priced. That they are shooting to be a home improvement store and not really a supplier to businesses, with the main focus being "like a brick and mortar amazon".

They're following WalMart's grocery business model over the past 5-10 years. Steadily drop all inventory except for the most popular products, and keep rolling. The remaining products are cheap, but you can't get what you need without going to a better stocked grocery store.

I don't care if there's 15 linear feet of shelf space for Kraft mac&cheese. I don't eat it. Where's the Mexican food products that aren't made by Old El Paso?

So hopefully.....good Ol building Supply hardware will come back around??? Like the ones with the corner table, bad coffee, good conversation, and Great people.

Yep. I remember when they used to have big outdoor lumber sheds. That's okay, more construction business will move to the real hardware stores.. But there's less of them :/

Paging Carolina cocksucker for his input since he said to be a manager at Lowe’s.
I thought he had changed careers and became a EMT or something???

I try to get everything I can from our excellent local yard, Hoke Lumber in Cornelius. Not open weekends, but compare any lumber product to Lowe's or Home Depot and its night and day.

Also Queen City lumber.

Support your local suppliers, they are the last bastion of quality products.

Since Lowes is one of the bigger stores in Lexington, when it was time for me to go back to "work" part time after a 7 year hiatus, Lowes was one of the first applications I put in, since I have a little experience in just about every department they have. They never have even so much as contacted me for an interview - no big deal. I am usually working on some kind of project around the house from remodeling the kitchen to adding on an addition for a master bedroom and bathroom. One of the projects I've done most recently involved new kitchen cabinets from Lowes, a countertop from IKEA (I liked theirs better) and a kitchen faucet from Lowes. Since the countertop was butcher block thickness, the stems from the faucet were just a little too short to be able to thread the water lines onto with the plastic "nuts" that they include with the faucet. This was constantly causing leaks, even though I bought new stainless lines instead of the compression type fittings the old lines had.

So I go to Lowes to hopefully fix the problem once and for all. I bring one of the thick plastic "nuts" that come with the faucet to ask if there is something thinner - hopefully an actual metal nut like used to be available. There are like 10 people in the whole store, so I look over the shelves and pegs and cannot find anything suitable. I push the "Call for assistance" button and the message rings out through the store "Assistance needed in Plumbing". A couple minutes later, it announces again. This time with two bells afterwards. A couple minutes later, it goes off again - three bells. 10 minutes go by and a customer walks by looking lost. I ask him what he's working on, he tells me he needs Teflon tape and a wax ring to install a toilet. I point him over to the display with the Teflon tape and help him find it and the wax toilet rings. Another customer happens by and asks me where he can find a compression fitting to reduce from 3/8" to 1/4". Find it and he's on his way. Meanwhile another customer asks me about a drain wye and a flange. Fix him up. I walk over and hit the button again and it rings out again as the customer I just helped says, "Wait..... you DON'T work here? I'm sorry to bother you!" Actually, it was no bother at all!

So finally, about 30 minutes after the initial call, a kid who looked to be about 17 comes by and shuts off the call button and asks how he can help me. I tell him that I'm looking for a metal nut approximately 1/8" thick in 1/2" pipe thread. He responds, "If it's not on the shelf, we don't have it.". Blood boiling, I ask him if they MIGHT have something like that in another department, to which he replies, "They might..... I'll try to call someone for you." Now we might be getting somewhere. He struggles with his cordless phone for about 5 minutes trying to remember what extension hardware is, so I tell him nevermind since hardware is about 30 feet from plumbing, I'll just walk.

As I'm walking, I start to think about 1/2" pipe thread and wonder if it's at all similar to 1/2" metal conduit thread. Guess what.......... it is. A quick stroll to Electrical found me exactly what I needed for less than $1.

I applied once.....got the you cant know a little about everything response...your too young. So a son of a mechanic, carpenter. Grandson of a mechanic, home builder, farmer, and truck driver knew to little about anything to work at Lowe's.
It was just convenient next to the community college I attended.

I have had many similar experiences since @ManglerYJ

So instead of hiring people who know a little about everything, they hire people that know nothing about anything. But at least the Bluetooth fidget spinner display was well organized.

They are treating it more like a typical retail store than a true hardware store. They will stock more of what sells the most, and less of what doesn't.
That's also what Sears is doing with Craftsman tools  glad I bought all into that....

Depends on the store. Lowe's in Knightdale is pure crap. Home Depot in Knightdale is decent. Lowe's in WF is all right. HD in WF is great. Both Lowes and HD on Capital are all right. I haven't been in the ones in Cary in years. The HD on Strickland is pretty great. I hate that it and the one in WF are so far away. I think almost all of them are still open as I type this. Ferguson closed 4 hours ago, as did all of the hardware stores and lumber yards.

Most trips to "the store" involve going to HD, then Lowes, then back to HD, then home... or the inverse of that.

All of them have a shitpile of overpriced crappy tool chests for sale, if you're into that sort of thing. Also lots of shitty, ugly, overpriced light fixtures.

Every time I go in my local one here, I can't help but comment, usually out loud, that the employees there are barely a few steps about Walmart employees.

Absolutely. Terrible.

And worse, the speed at which this decline happened.

Speaking of Simpson brackets, both of our local lumber yards have most of them for around half the price of Lowe's, and that's if Lowe's carries it at all. Worth shopping around...

I've all but gave up on my local Lowe's. Customer service is so far the drain its retarded. Never more than two registers open at a time. its common to see employees walking around with headphones in playing music so loud you can hear it as they walk by and get looked at like a dick if you dared ask them anything. Hardware is so unorganized it takes longer to find a the correct grade bolt in its proper place than to decide what length to get. The only thing I'll walk in there to buy is lumber. Everything else I'll go out of my way not to deal with Lowe's. Fastenal for hardware, Industrial supply houses for tools and fab expendables, and hell, Wal-Mart is even better for household stuff and spray paint. I hate Wal-Mart too. Them and Lowe's are practically next door to eachother less than 1/2 mile from my house.

Problem is, all we have is Lowes.

Remember lowes has to keep the 48 going. Hd seems to be the better of the 2 they have so much more materials and tools to choose from. Does anybody remember the HQ home headquarters now that was a store?
