Getting ready to build a small deck behind the house and went to price lumber at Lowes. By their prices I'm going to need about $500 in lumber.

Just wondering if there's a better source for it than the big home improvement stores. Anyone know if 84 Lumber or anywhere else is a better idea.

Looking for something local to the Triad.

thanks

I just built small Deck last week and ended up just going to Lowes..

84's prices were almost the same here in Raleigh..

SOB! I got a College buddy that is a Contractor Supplier in G-boro. Gave him a call and he's having everything dropped off at my house for $300 including delivery charges. Got it at his cost. WOOOO Nice to have friends in the right places. :D

12x16

I've got a Concrete Pad behind the house that is about 14' wide and sticks out about 30' from the house. on the end was a metal shed that I ripped down. Lo and behold under it was metal framework embedded in the concrete. so instead of busting that up, hauling it off and re pouring, I thought a nice wooden patio over the end of the pad would be a nice addition. hope to build it this weekend.

Oh and feel free to swing by and help :D

I would hate to think I would depend on sLowes to choose what lumber I would use. The quality is poor at best and takes a lot of going through to get what you want.

yup it took me about 1 hr to find all the boards I needed.. and I only need about 16 boards

I hate to tell you this but you are wasting your time looking for "the good wood". That new formula they use that does not have arsenic will warp like crazy. I built my deck a few years back and after a few months I had to replace a bunch of boards. Its very disappointing. Maybe they improved the wood by now. If I were to redo it I would put Trex. My deck is only about 3-4 years old and I have thought of ripping it out and starting over. Only thing stopping me is $ and time!

5/4 decking sucks. If you use it ,it is best to put your framework on 16" centers and use 3 screws at each joint. I prefer to use 2x6 for decking. It holds up a lot longer without warping.

good to know on teh new PT boards. Almost ended up with that, but he was 3 weeks out on getting it. May have to warn him on it.

as for Trex, let me see... in store $9 a board for PT, $37 a board a T-rex.... ya.. I can't do that!

oh and Junk man, no 5/4 board for me, 2x6 all the way around ;)

i used to work delivery for lowe's.... their lumber, if bought by the unit, is actually pretty good... i dare say i think it's the best treated available locally..... their untreated i think is second only to home depot.... we bought a bunch from guy c lee and it was shit... as was the crap from 84 lumber and builders first source.... and low and behold, lowe's price matches.....

my 2 cents

we used Pro-Cell for the deck at my dad's new house.... guy c lee carries it or you can buy it direct and save some money but you have to be able to unload it from a semi if you go that route..... i forget the price per board but it's available in tongue and groove which is damn nice and it is a solid and true 1x6" board unlike the competitors....

-Erik <--- loved the way the procell came out... blind screwed with 316SS :)
