when the 4Runner threw a rod bearing I bought a '95 Merc Tracer - 4dr Escort clone - at the Mendonhall auction for $500.
That thing was a fantastic don't-give-a-shit DD. Pulled the 22re out and dropped the block in the trunk to move it but couldn't afford the machine work, so it sat in there for a good 6 months. Ran that thing like a dog for 2 years, sold it for $1k. I'd buy another just to paint funny and redline all around town for giggles.

Edit - the headliner had a bunch of little brown stains on it. Could never figure out what it was, used to joke about somebody exploding in it (or something more sinister).
Years later my wife left an unopened coke can in her Mazda and it got too hot inside - Boom. I then realized what those stains must have been.

Had a substitute one time tell me I couldn’t use the bathroom…to the point of literally blocking the door. As a Valedictorian candidate and top 5 recruit in my sport in the state, I Told the sub if she was serious, I was pissing in the trash can. I’m a shit poker player and don’t bluff…the principal got to the classroom as I was dumping the liquid contents of the trash can out the window. I got 3 days in school suspension and I never saw that sub in that school the remainder of high school.
 
I bought a cj5 crawler project once that had those. I ended up parting it.

I don't know if he did, but I recall a big block rockwell buggy that ran them for a few years of getting beat on. They were meant to be cheap temp links, but held up surprisingly well. The joints get play in then pretty quick.
