Tonight is my annual shave. I have to take a respirator fit test annually at work, my day is tomorrow.

Must be nice to grow a beard. My work starts looking at me funny if I get a 5 o’clock shadow. Our annual fit test involves reading a poem about rainbows and a pot of gold. True story!

Yeah, Uncle Sam doesn’t look too kindly on not being clean shaven. 16 years and counting. Told the wife that once I’m out it’s on!! Of course I’ll probably get a job that requires a clean face

I go on terminal in a month. Already got a head start on the hair. The beard long enough to braid is the next step.

Congrats! I can’t wait to make mile marker 214 on my trip of life!! You guys on that side of the fence are a little more lenient on facial hair. I have worked with a couple teams throughout the years and it was enjoyable to not be so worried about the menial shit. Anyways, yes, braided beard length! I can get behind that kind of thinking!!

I see your moving to Aberdeen. I’ve got a ton of contacts around Bragg from being here so long. If you run into any problems or need anything let me know. I actually have a few good friends that live in Aberdeen that I’m sure they’d help a brother in need. Good luck.

Oh yeah. I’ve been pretty scarce around the office. Retiring is a full time job from the army. They don’t make it easy. All sorts of bs to go through.
Seems to be the same way in the Air Force .... took my bro-in law 6 months to retire.

You wouldn’t believe the amount of crap you have to do.
Civilian job: I’m retiring. Everyone says congrats, maybe some cake in the break room, you go home and fish.
Army: finance class, va benefits class, resume writing class, job search class, moving your belongings class, turn all of your gear in (this can take multiple appointments), several va appointments, final physical, and the list goes on and on. It’s ridiculous. I’ve expressed my frustration at each of these appointments. Especially all of those dumb classes. It’s the army’s way of covering their ass if you become the bum under the overpass bridge. They can say “we gave him the tools to succeed, not our fault”.

^^ it’s true. I have had enough friends go through it and it is a PAINFUL process. Like @Wes said it mostly a CYA for the Army but I will say that NOTHING frustrates me more when a young joe does 4 yrs and decides to hang it up for whatever reason and they breeze through the classes and workshops complaining the whole time and then a few months after getting out are the ones who have issues about VA paperwork/ benefits, not having a job, xyz.... the classes may suck but if you take the time and use it they will pay dividends later. Especially for the older guys retiring that have a lot on the line. Young joe is young and resilient and can bounce back a bit easier.

The only thing I remember in Out processing in 99 was there was an A1C had to be in his late 30's early 40's in payroll working my file. All I could think was "what did he do to lose that many stripes"

I know it’s a long drawn out process. But don’t forget, You know you’re getting a ton of half days. You get to cash in all your leave and get paid or take the paid leave. And all these appointments will be a very small price to pay for the retirement benefits. There are few things of equal value in the civilian world. And that tricare is going to save you and your family a lot of money in health insurance.

Don’t ever sell leave. All you get is base pay. If you take it, you still get BAH and BAS.

Agreed. Health insurance is gonna be a savior. No pun intended. The reason i bitch is that the classes are geared at young soldiers who maybe did one enlistment and joined from mom and dads house never living on their own. A 20 plus year guy doesn’t need a budget class. Been managing my money so far and I’m fine. I don’t need a class on finding a job. Had one lined up well before retirement. It’s a lot of common sense classes that a grown man with a family doesn’t need. Like I said, it’s more for the young and single guys that don’t have a plan.

Orrrrrr. You could work all the way up to the last day and get the base and bah and food, AND sell the leave and get the base.
