Leverage for those real door locks
Can you imagine how frequently door locks would break these days if we didn't use FOB's to open them every time?

This past summer, we had an intern (college grad) whose fob had just died, and literally did not know that you could lock and unlock the doors using the key.o_O

Meanwhile the fob in my Mazda died 6? years ago and I've never missed it. No big deal to do it the old way.

Many of the cars dont have key access on both front doors anymore. Typically it is only 1 door with access. And then you have to figure out how to disable to alarm that was set with the fob.

Hate to be a topper but I got one worse than that.

A co-worker has a new Audi. Somehow the battery died at only 6 months old. Whatever. Its a Saturday and while covered by warranty he doesnt want to be stuck at the office. Wants to drive home and let them deal with it Monday. Ok, Ill jump you off. Key fob doesnt work with dead battery. Use the key. Puts key in door and no joy. He looks confused. Hes a millennial and not exactly mechanically inclined. Here Ill help. Key in slot turn and....Mother of GOD the stupidity. It isnt a mechanical lock. You can instantly feel it. The key just turns an electroswitch that activates the power lock mechanism.

The solution ended up entailing removing a tire and an inner fender to get jumper cables onto the battery to open the door....or so Im told. I checked out before all that.

Maybe we'll get to go back to mechanical keys now that it's becoming more common for thieves to figure out how to replicate the signals to open up the electronics.
