Moving to NC

Hi all,
A while back I registered on this site and have been reading here off and on.

My wife is from the Elizabeth City area originally and we have been looking at relocating back to NC. I spent some time with my sister in Charlotte this winter but I really was into the "city" and being that I am coming from NH I would like to find a part of the state where I could settle and not feel like I was living in the big city but not being in the middle of no where. Small town like we have here would be cool.

We would be relocating our business as well so we are looking for advice on what part of the state we could find work and reasonable housing costs as well as run a 4x4 business and be welcomed by the residence of the area.

So all that being said, I would like to hear from you guys that live there, where, why, and any details you might want to add.

hmm... a 4x4 shop also? Raleigh and greensboro would be the ideal because of population. maybe greensboro because they have a few more 4x4 events then raleigh.
 
The bigger question is do you do mostly web sales?? or do you also do install, etc..

So will you need a shop with bays, or a warehouse..

if you want to come to raleigh I can get ya some info on locations
 
i think raleigh would be a good bet if you're a full service kind of shop. i know there are some guys around here that do some work, but i don't know of anywhere that's really a full time shop (could be wrong, just don't know of anywhere).

the rock shop, tarheel, and 4 wheel parts have the charlotte area pretty locked up i believe.

raleigh also has a bit of a bigger city feel without all the craziness. traffic can be a pain at times in some areas though.
 
Thanks for all the comments. We will be looking at alot of locations and we have not ruled any out yet. Keep the info flowing and maybe we will get to wheel with you all soon.....

Well as far as areas to live go I like the SE and E areas of Charlotte. ie matthews and mint hill areas for consistently nice neighborhoods and still close to downtown. traffic is never bad for me to get in and out of downtown charlotte. Several guys hidden out east with no shops but on the west side.
 
Kernersville is in the middle of what is called the triad (High Point, Winston Salem, Greensboro). That gives you 3 average size cities to pull your customer base from as well as the Fed Ex hub will be located there for any shipping needs you might have. For housing, just below Kernersville you have Davidson county which has low taxes and decent schools. Geographically it is almost the center of the state with 4.5 hours to Murphy/Tellico ORV and the same to Nags Head for fishing and beaches and Elizabeth City. 1.5 hours to the south is Uwharrie ORV park that is frequented by folks from this area as well as other "private" wheeling areas. Be careful of the Guilford county school system and higher property taxes in Greensboro but this area has alot to offer anybody wanting to relocate here. Like the other guys have said, Charlotte has some shops already and Raleigh is even further away from legal wheeling. That's more than I've typed since I've been on this site.

I just checked out your web site and am interested in simulated bead lock black wheels for my daily driver. I am currently running 285 Pro Comps and want to go to the 315's but have been told I have to get a different wheel than stock. The black would look good as my F-250 is white with black accents on it. Can you advise or should contact you directly for a price and size info? Scott

I share Bronco Slim's comments regarding Kernersville, heart of the Triad. I grew up there and it's a good place for a family. As mentioned, it's very close to Greensboro, Winston, and High Point + it's right on I-40 which runs directly to the coast and into the mountians of NC/TN.

As far as a "draw", I can't think of anything super rare that you can only find or do in the Triad area.

There's more money in Raleigh and Charlotte, but more it's crowded, more taxes, more traffic, etc. Although these cities are growing faster than the Triad.

Another piece of advice, don't go any further East than Raleigh, it gets pretty flat and sandy (not my favorite wheelin' terrain).

There are some very reasonable houses with acerage all over NC, just depends how close you want to be to a city.

Another beautiful spot is Stokes county (kinda country), but the land around Belews creek (lake) is pretty awesome.

And I know a good gun shop... they're gonna need one.

But looking on the upside of things, they'll be turning over product like crazy...... it will all be going out the warehouse back door in the middle of the night.
 
Winston Salem / Greensboro would be nice. Really anywhere along route 40 that goes from Ashville to almost Raleigh.

Do check out Uwharrie. If you set-up a rock shop near there you could fix a couple of Dana 35s per week and a few tires. Plus as people come off the trail they will almost always have an upgrade in mind..

(maybe even a rock garden in the side yard for testing and gathering) :bronco:

Side yard rock garden could break the D35's there - save the hassle of towing it off the trail. Win win for everyone.:lol::lol:
 
I always wanted to go out there, buy some property, build a place like the outpost, but bigger with 4x4 accessorires, a repair shop, and rentable bays with lifts... maybe even try to get a bojangles built into it... :p
 
Hwy. 109 in the middle of El Dorado NC. bout an hour 15 mins south of gboro depending where exactly u are in the triad area.
its not to extreme of a place, only a couple of obstacles and the rest is just trails that go up and down thru the woods...gets redundant with a built rig

but if it rains then it is really fun :)
 
you should check out the areas around asheville like madison county or hendersonville your not to far away from everything and 4x4 buisness is big out here plus the mountains are a nice place to live
 
Everyone seems to feel Greensboro area is the ticket, my wife is even from there so its not all bad. That said, Raleigh :bounce:REALLY NEEDS A REAL 4X4 SHOP:bounce2:. There is a lot to offer here too. Only about 1.5 hrs to ure. There are many folks here who wheel. We have several top universities and the Research Triangle Park to bring in business from young and old alike. The Triad is nice, I even lived there for a while but Raleigh has more to offer in my opinion. So give the Raleigh area a chance. Well got to shutdown due to lightning and hail storm.
