So I've owned wranglers, xj's, or zj's my entire life minus a slight affair with a z28. Just got seperated and wifey is taking the grocery getter. The YJ is just a complete pita to get the kids into daily and it leaves no ability to load any of their goodies up. Any suggestions for a fairly decent sized suv (no land yaucts needed) would be greatly appreciated. The price is the crappy part. Really looking to stay around 8k but would like to stay around 6-7. I only work 10 miles from the house so gas mileage isn't that important to me.

FSJ or grand cherokee.. You can pick up a WJ for your price range if you look in the right places, with the Inline 6 its a nice rig, and you can throw a BB lift on it really quick to make it look more capable

YOU BIG GIRL!
No kidding. I don't feel like feeding the ex anymore ammo for court. I have full custody now so carting them all over gods green earth and back in my job. 6 hour round trips with a 2&1 year old in a yj makes me cringe just thinking about it.

In that case...Good on you! and Congrats. I got custody of my kid too so I understand. and If I had only the CJ, it wouldn't have cut it for me. I have a ZJ and haul three kids around now with no issues. 1,6 and 9 y/o.

Wait a minute, is this to replace the YJ or just an addition, replacing the vehicle you "lost"? Is this to be wheeled, or just a 4 dr vehicle for transporting the kids?
What about a good old late model XJ? You could get a really nice one in your price range? Or a 4 door sedan, like a Camry?

This is to replace the YJ. The lawyers and 1 income have been a killer on $$$ and just trying to stay afloat right now.

No wheeling just a grocery getter/trip/DD

Thought about a older xj but have to have a "nicer" vehicle for work to transport customers.

sedan is possible but last time I tried to cram 2 pack n' plays and bags for me and the kids in a car it just didn't work.

In that case...Good on you! and Congrats
Well its prob a year long situation until she gets on her feet and gets a place to have the kids 50% of the time.

I was in your shoes once. I was too nice and lost my daughter later. I'm now in court again, and more $$$. My advice, don't let her get on her feet. Don't play nice. Take advantage of your situation, buy a grocery getter and sell the yj, make every effort for the kids. Jeeps are a dime a dozen, your kids are only here now. I promise she will take advantage of you later. Save this post, so you can look back on it later and appreciate that you listened or hate yourself that you didn't.

LoL is this like the people who call me and say "I told you not to get married"? haha. But on a good note we aren't fighting and everything is getting laid out in a seperation agreement so should be min fighting down the road atleast from what could happen.

Anyone have opinions on rovers btw?

I would suggest Grand Cherokee..

I bought a newer 2005 model for the wife and she loves it..

it can haul us, kids, pack and plays, floaty stuff, coolers, etc..

I also did not get the V8 I got her V6 and we get 22-23 mpg on road trips.. about 16-17 around town..
we have taken it to florida, up north, and even drove it on the beach at carolina beach.. it did great..

I have an 04 Columbia KJ I'm getting ready to get rid of. Maybe more than you are looking for but it has been a fantastic vehicle. Wife wants something else. 1-owner

well the ranges seem alil high but have a look/feel that I love. The discos seem to be comp in price (used) to the grands.
if budget is a concern, don't go rover.
You'll have a frigging power window fail, and it will require you to replace the engine and tires for 1 BILLION dollars.

(Don't ask, friends rear window in their baby rover kept acting up, they ended up replacing the computer and the entire door assembly to fix it. Under warranty, but still)

they sold it 2 weeks after the warranty was up.

raleighjeepguy - I was also in the same shoes as you. You mentioned "full custody", you mean physical custody don't you? Legal custody (which was 50/50) is what my ex tried to ruin my life with. My 2 daughters are now 18 and 20 and all I'll say is the family has been thru a lot. Good luck and hang tough. If your lookin for advice I figure you'll ask.
As far as land rovers go, I think they cost too much to repair.
