My first engine “build”

The 94 doesn't have TBI injection, it has multi port fuel injection and yes it has a CPS.
O2 sensor (only has 1) won't care if there is a cat or not since it is upstream of the cat.
Are you keeping the factory injection or going aftermarket? If keeping factory, best to use a 999 from a YJ or TJ 4.0
if you're going with aftermarket injection, none of the OEM stuff matters anyway
boy I'm feeling sheepish, I know the difference in TBI and Direct, and I pulled the fuel rail and everything off, just forgot in my morning haze I guess... more coffee please!

Keeping the factory injection. I haven't looked yet, but is there a CPS on the '87YJ a999?

Not on a 87. First year of FI would be 91 YJ. Back in the day, you could be a crank sensor relocation kit from Mopar that mounted it on the harmonic balancer. But the cost was more than a good used transmission.
Look for a 91-95 YJ 999 or a TJ version will work as well.
The only real difference is the YJ and TJ will have slightly different clocking where the t case bolts up. It's minimal and likely not enough to matter

Starting to clean up nicely!

Some might say sacrilege on the color, but it looks damn nice up next to the copper color of the jeep. After all it’s an ‘87 so it’s still AMC. Poetic freedom I say.

Well, forgot to post any progress, but here’s where we are.

At this point it has really been clean up. Even filed and sanded the aluminum brackets casting marks.

Tried cleaning the alternator after having it tested with a “Pass”. But DAMN! I don’t know if it’s something about the electromagnetic field, but the dirt and grease are embedded in the housing and I’d rather buy a new one than spend anymore time on that fawker!

And some elbow grease bling on the valve cover.

Alright, now that I’m moved I’m starting the think about what I want to do for engine/drivetrain combo.

Currently, Stock worn out 258 with mc2100, a999, and NP 207 with d30/d35.

I have a 1994 4.0 from this build thread that to the dissatisfaction of many is not stroked as of yet.

Options:

1. 4.0, use 258 intake and carb, boot to a999/NP207 and run. Easiest

2. 4.0 carbed, AW4 manual shift, 231/242,

3. 4.0, AW4, 231 or 242, Fuel injected.most modern and reliable until an EMP.

I kinda know what I should do at this point, but I’m looking for a sounding board to talk it out.

Go easy and let ‘er rip, go all in and be done (until I’m ready to stroke). Other options I’m not considering?

Just talking it out… go!

#3, of course

So, with Option 3 in mind, what do I need to prep for or consider?

Pull motor, trans and Tcase. Clean out any bullshit wiring. Motor mounts should be the same so

Transmission mount?
Assuming I can find an AW4 with wiring and computer, what needs to be considered in linking it up to the wiring and computer I have now? Or are they stand alone.

Transmission linkage and shifter???
Driveshaft
Fuel pump? Assuming frame rail mounted pump with fore and aft filters.

What other items need to be considered or planned for? And hopefully some answers along with the list of items.

The computer and harness from the 4.0 donor will have the trans control covered. You need a pre 99 computer and harness to run the distributor the 96-98 I believe with 3 plugs on a silver computer is jtec and the better option. The Motorola with black case and one big plug are known to have capacitor failures in the circuit that reads crank position
