NC Public School system

First of all I'm 18 not going to collage and was a slack @$$ in school
On the posters childs note
- In elementry school I was labeled with a learning disabilty in writing. From there I was takin' out of class one or two days a week and set in a classroom with peers of the same nature. I do belive it worked well but not as well as intended. But then again I was a slack @$$. If her situation warrents it and from what I have read it doesn't sound like but just tossing an idea in the air. (ohh and just to put it out there I was AG in all subjects other than writing, which kept me out of the AG program)
- In middle school 7th grade I had one of the "night-mare" teachers, she was awful. She did not teach the class at all, she honestly took "slide shows" from other teachers and the web and had us copy them. (we knew b/c we went through other notes from kids in our school and searched the internet) She also told us one day in class "The book can teach you better then I can." Not sure if this was just pure laziness or incompatance, never-the-less, horrible teacher. Her behavior methods were horrible too. Our science rooms had a "storage closet" which she sat kids in, in the dark for the entire class. Many of the parents got involved and needless to say she did not finish out the year for "medical reasons." (she was spotted working at a nail saloon down the road) So if your child has a teacher like this, I would say complain so other students/parents don't have to deal with it.
Basically what I am trying to say is there are programs within the school that the active student and parent can take advantage of. But the parent must voice a consern to the right person. Which in my case was my consular (SP?). And in my hosnest opion, when it is time for her to move to middle school and high school, go to the local schools and see how there programs are set up. And all of the programs not just the teaching. (ex Admin, student services, disapline)
On Kids not taking responabilty for there actions
-In my younger days I was not punished firmly so I took advantage of every situation that I could. So I recomned (not being a parent and being a child myself) go through with what ever you say ALL OF THE TIME if you show that the/your child that they can get away with it once they will try, try agian. Eg. I faild 5th grade no doubt about it. I earned all U's or F's what ever they were called, but since I was a good kid I was promoted to the next grade. That was a BAD idea, it thought me I could do bare minimum and still succeed.

Nothing like putting all of my dirty laundry out there:shaking:

It is a shame that teachers, etc. did not motivate you to do more. It is also a shame that the system works the way it does. It has it's positive and negative aspects, I guess like anything else in the world.

my wife is a middle school teacher and deals with so many parents who could care less how their kids are doing...
She has 5 students who speak absolutely no English in 1 class...
She has 3 students who have moved 4 times THIS year. Pay first week's rent, wait to get evicted, move, repeat process...
Students who make no attempt whatsoever to do their work in a Hickory City school receive a 60!!!! WTF?
At least you are involved. Good job.
My son is in preschool and gets bored easily, we made sure he was given extra things to do and he is doing better. I hate the fact that he was born in December and will probably be 5 1/2 before Kindergarten, unless we can get him in a 4 year old program. He will be bored stiff.
Sounds like you have a plan and a way to reward, so you shoudl see results.
There are many teachers who are scared to death to say the least little thing to their kids because, by the time it gets home and told to the parents, you would have thought the teracher smacked the kid in the mouth by the way the parents react. It is a sad commentary that we expect more and teach harder concepts than ever, but have taken away soooooo many of the teacher's tools for discipline.
Oh, and Brent. You are complaining that it takes more than one class to finish her work when it took you over a year to finish a spring over...:flipoff2:

and you were doing so good through your speach until you said that... now you too sir are off the Christmas card list! That now makes, no card for Galen, No Card for Caver, no card for Chris.... at this rate, Christmas postage is going to be cheap!

How is the sticker system working? Did you have a conference with your child's teacher?

Seems to be working. in two weeks she's had one day that she got 3 out 4 stamps. All others she's brought home 4 stamps. She's still excited about it, and makes a point to tell me as soon as I walk in the door. Bu twhat I like best is that when she got her 3 stamps, she came to me with her head down and humiliated that she only got 3. Humitlity is a good teacher in my book.

Oh and she didn't get full stamps that day because she snuck a coloring book to school.

Let's see... that leaves each of your families & the other charter member of the "We Used to Wheel... Now Our Women Dictate What We Do" Club... Donovan. I'd say 5 cards will cover that! :flipoff2:

Back on subject, I with you on not wanting to perpetuate the "prize for work" thing. However, Josh has always been the type that will work his guts out for a freakin prize from the gumball machine or trinket from $ General... now it's evolved into playing computer games. As long as they understand it's a reward and not an entitlement, I'm OK with it.
