NC4X4 Hunting and Fishing

My buddy slayed this monster down around Brevard this past weekend. 22" spread.

Nice cull. Just kidding. Way bigger than anything I've ever killed.

me too. But some guys like to hunt these monsters to the tune of $5k. This little guy is about a mere 160lbs and is the smallest of the bunch heading to TX this week.

A friend of mine goes on those paid hunts. He said you’re in a shooting house and a bunch of the deer walk out and the guide tells you how much each one costs for you to shoot. You just decide if you want a $2k buck, $3k buck etc.

I have a friend who was a “guide” down there she carried a book with all the bucks in it and the cost of each. Her job was to sit there listen to the bullshit stories and make the client happy while he drank whiskey until a deer came out. She did it for two years and made some bank, but being a pretty blond helps

Interesting, dad shot that buck from a 18' ladder stand w a CVA muzzleloader w a Barnes T-EZ solid copper sabot. It was walking slightly towards him about 75 yrds when he shot it. He hit it low, behind the right shoulder. The exit was high and grazed the bottom of backstrap on left side inches from the ham.Where the deer was is probly 6' lower than the ground where the stand is so he was shooting down, but the bullet went up after it hit the deer. The deer kicked and dropped w the shot and didn't move.I wonder why the trajectory changed? I would think a rib would have no effect on it at that speed.

I wonder if it twisted/rolled as it was dropping from the sound of the shot? I've seen slo-mo videos of that happening.

A friend wondered if he shot the ground in front of the buck and the solid copper bullet bounced up and hit it.The buck was crossing a narrow path w some gravel on it.

That’s not my kind of hunting.

It was funny this morning. We hadn’t see a deer all week and not 1/2 mile at 4am while leaving the B&B to head home, we hit a huge buck. He took off down the road back behind the local vet’s house.

Well today has been interesting..... just had bear hunters run a track to within 100 yards of my stand. Not sure if they treed or not but it’s on private so they loaded dogs up and left... maybe my deer hunt turned into a bear hunt. That is if there was even a bear in the tree

I had 1 medium sized doe & 3 fawns I watched for 15 minutes in the backyard yesterday. Kept waiting for a bigger one or a buck, but no dice.

Guy I hunt with in Cabarrus county tagged a 7 pointer at 7:45 today. This is the 4th 7 pointer he's tagged in a row on that property.

Welp swing and miss for me on a big mountain doe. Not sure if bow got knocked off or I didn’t account enough for the steep shot angle. Gotta shot bow tomorrow to find out and rework the single bevel tonight.

The best way to perfect your archery angle aiming is to get up in a stand about as high you like to hunt, have a friend move the target 20,30/40/10 yrds. etc. After you shoot enough at one distance to be confident the friend can move the target, bring back the arrows and send them back up to you w a cord and a bucket/pvc pipe.I only use 2 pins on my bow, The top one is for treestands. If the deer is 10 yrds.my pin is about knee height under the deer.20/30 yrds about dead on. The lower pin is set for 40/50yrds and works on the ground too. With distance/angle practice the aiming comes naturally.

Ya I’m thinking angle threw me off. I’m only 14ft up. But I’m easily 20-25 ft higher than that above the deer so 35-40 feet below me at 24 yards

20 some years ago I took a shot at buck about 50 yrds.It was almost broadside when I stopped w a mhheeggg. I was confident w my bow and the yrds. The moment I released the buck started walking and I watched the arrow fly down as the deer moved to the left. The elevation was dead on but I hit it in the lower ham.I got lucky, the broadhead punched a big hole in the ham and split the artery, there was a red carpet 5' wide on the ground when went to look for it, 20 mins. later/dusk. It ran about 60 yrds.I try to limit my shots to 30/40 yrds now and 10/20 yrds is golden.

I’ve never had any of my bows set up for it’s 3rd axis and have paid the price for it. I had a 21” wide 10pt 12yds off the tree I was almost 30’ up last yr. I aimed at his spine knowing it would be lower and still shot right under him. A friend killed him with a rifle a couple weeks after that. I still need to change sights for that as I hunt many tight spots and near vertical shots can be common. Practicing those shots with a regular box target and replicating what happens in the woods can be hard to do.

Had an 8-point ~45 yards from the porch at 6am today...if he'll come out during shooting hours I might have to let the smoke pole eat!

EDIT: Well he circled back ~13 hours later!

You best Splane to her you can shoot 6 deer and you gotta make sure one you want doesn’t get got so you gotta sit there and protect your spot.

And then after deer season your deer stand makes a good squirrel hunting stand

A couple years ago I did an Exotic Hunt at Caryonah(TN) after our planned Wyoming Pronghorn hunt was ruined the day before we left by an Oct ice storm hitting our hunting area. ($800 worth of non-res tags wasted!)

Overall - Caryonah was a pretty nice experience. I bagged a gorgeous Painted Desert Ram and my dad took a very delicious wild boar.

I did a write-up on it explaining how it worked, my thoughts about fence hunting, etc. It's too long to repost here. (But there are pictures!)

A review of Caryonah Game Ranch

Would I go back? Mmm... yes. But it's kind of like fishing in a stocked pond. Lately, I've been feeling the urge to go somewhere, and I've been torn on either going after WY Pronghorn/CO Elk next year, or trying an open range Texas/New Mexico hunt for an exotic like an Aoudad or Oryx. This will also be my 3rd year putting in for a Maine Moose, so maybe I'll get lucky there!

(With a Ruger Gunsite Scout rifle in .308. A fantastic rifle. Highly recommended!)

(Dinks Taxidermy in Marion, NC did an AMAZING job.)

As an aside - Here's what a .308 150 gr Winchester Power Point softball did exiting through the far rib cage of the ram.
