After going to Callalantee this weekend I realized how much I really love URE. Callalantee is pretty cool, but the trails at URE just make me feel more at home. It's my preferred wheeling place. That being said, I don't want to lose it and I don't want to see any trails getting closed.

I happened to read the front page write-up about the FS stance on URE trails and I also saw the thread about the strange group of hikers scoping out the trails. In addition, I've also noticed an exceeding amount of trash and downed signage on the trails. Therefore, I wanted to send a feeler out to the community about a NC4x4.com sponsored cleanup day at URE.

My current idea is for us to work with the FS to schedule a date before the trails close to go through with our rigs (and perhaps small garden style trailers) and clean up the trails. It would be awesome if we could have the NC4x4.com t-shirts complete by then so that we can show the community we care about the trail system. If it isn't possible to schedule a date before the season ends, then perhaps the forest service will allow us to bring rigs/atvs/trailers out on the trail with the purpose of cleaning it up.

I'd like to get all of the trails cleaned up, but that all depends on how many people are willing to show up and help. I'd love to get Terry (Your Hot Dog Guy) out there serving up some dogs for us hungry cleaner-uppers. He'll likely be there already. :p

I know many of you have some connections with the FS and know how to get something like this scheduled. What are your thoughts? What do you think would be a good date? How can we make this event visible to the community?

Visibility ideas:
1. Signs out at the outpost 1-2 weeks prior to scheduled date.
2. This website.
3. Word of mouth

I applaud your desire to help Chris!

WTS, each of the OHV trails at Uwharrie have a sponsoring club. Some trails have more than one sponsor club. One of the responsibilities of the sponsor club is trail clean up. Sometimes during the season more trash gets put down than gets picked up :( and sponsor clubs that are doing clean up may get behind.

The BEST thing that could happen would be for each person to pick up just 1 small bag each time they ride. If this was done I believe the trash problem would be taken care of. I know for a fact that even the best of intentions get waylaid in the heat of the moment and some of us forget to do our part.

I DO like the idea of a NC4x4 support day! I also think it help the FS realize the potential benefit this on line 4wd community could be for Uwharrie.

Do you think there is enough time get this organized before the season closes? A weekend date would be best since more people can attend. Perhaps December 12th? If not, who should I talk to at the forest service?

Any clue when the nc4x4.com t-shirts/hoodies will be available?

Perhaps nc4x4.com could sponsor/co-sponsor a trail?

They use to do work weekends that Mark Hall? organised IIRC. Did they stop that? I'd start with him. Not sure if he is on this board or not.

I'm not being negative here, but whos to say we even need to involve the forest service or any clubs.
If we want to band together and have a cleanup day...lets just do it.

No need to be bogged down with any meetings with FS.

Name a date/dates and lets JUST do it. Simply because we want to, and it is needed!

Clean-Up

NC 4x4 day sounds pretty good but it will be tough to get organized with participation in the next few weeks. Lot's of stuff going on w/Holidays and all. Spring before opening might be good.

1. Uwharrie gets more money from the government if it can log hours spent on projects.
2. We can do more than clean up if we meet with the FS and plan it out.

True...BUT lol

I am simply talking about picking up some trash on the trails because it's there.

By all means, we can set up meetings and do lots of other stuff. But that does take time and the fact is...we can pick up trash now.

Like Dylan said, if you want to go clean up the trails, go ahead :)

There is probably more accumulated trash now, at the end of the year. Personally, I'd wait until the trails close. Ample time to get it done before April 1st.

The FS will be using the winter closure to address the work day schedule and will be in touch with Mark Hall, FS Work Day Coordinator, about the 2010 work day schedule.

Also, like hobie said, documentation means more FS funding!

I was suggesting involving the FS because we may have to wait until after the season closes. We would need their permission to use our rigs to assist in the trash pickup.

That being said let's set a date and go from there. If we need t get with mark hall or the fs then we will do so.

mabey the last weekend that it is open go out and pick up all the trash and fix the fences that have been knocked down. at least when fs starts there work it looks respectable.

I'm in let's set it up. :gitrdun:

Looks like we got a decent amount of interest already. I'll be tossing around a few dates and will throw up a poll soon. Need to find out more about the feasibility of a cleanup day after season close.

I'm in on this, I need dates so I can plan ahead though.

Looks like the 12th/13th may be our best bet. It's expected there will be a lot of traffic on the trails that weekend since it's the last weekend of the season. I think this is a great weekend to do this, despite the short notice. We can make a day of wheeling and cleaning up the trails.

I'll need to check with NC4x4.com owners to make sure we can use their name, but I started a poll up about these two dates. If we're not able to use nc4x4.com's name then we will make this a little more informal and everyone can just bring a bag and meet up in the double parking lot for some cleaning and wheeling.

In the event that we can use the nc4x4.com name, what do you guys think about making some signs to put on our rigs to show what we are doing? Perhaps, "NC4X4.com URE Waste Management Team" or something similar. lol I hope that the t-shirts will be available, but I kind've doubt they'll be ready by then.

To expand on your idea,

Our club is local to Brown Mt OHV, Which is only One loop, But its a good trail ride with family on a Sunday afternoon and would hate to see it closed, Plus we working toward getting more 4wd access at Brown, I know its a long shot (No need to discuss it here). This would be a good way to show our interest in helping with the trails.

How about we look at our group riding up to Brown that same day and do a trash pick up, Maybe you can get some people involved in cleaning up any of the other state OHVs out there. I am not sure what else there is. That way NC4X4 can do a NC trail clean up day.

But I know I couldn't make URE that weekend, But still would like to do my part. I would be happy to bring it up to the TJC group and see if anyone can do a Brown Mt Trail Cleanup that weekend. Maybe there are others out there that would like to help in there local areas also.
