Need HVAC installer recomendations.

I had a compressor put in a 1.5 ton unit. Cost me around 800 just labor. Parts were under warranty. Km did mine.

Since your unit is old it is prob using old refrigerant (r12?) Stuff is over 100 per pound. Just went through that issue at the shop I work at, but on a larger scale.

Something that might be happening is everyone is busy. That causes prices to go up. If you can wait til mild months residential work will slow down and prices will be more competitive.

With this heat wave, most residential guys worth a damn are booked up 3-4 weeks out for installs.

Refrigerant at ten pounds or more...easily 1000.00

Some labor and walla' : 3k.

Thanks I just needed the perspective. I had no idea refrigerant was Gold!

Probably a factor..........sucks if it is a baseline. Price gouging cause your busy. A/C works is the new crud oil market. Supply and demand argument.

I can't remember what new refrigerant is but I want to say it was around $15 a pound. They don't make the old stuff anymore so they can charge whatever they want for it.

That's why I assumed it would be retro fitted with a modern compliant refrigerant/compressor and could not understand the higher price.

I believe to retrofit they have to replace the outside unit and possibly change out a few valves or something. Not completely sure on this. We looked at this option at our shop but went for a new unit.

No idea what the price has done in the last month though

AFAIK, it's similar to changing a car system to 134, different pressure switches, different expansion valve, and may not work as well.. I do believe it is due to higher operating pressures like stated above.

This is the exact replacement from a google search. Contacts are like under 30 bucs. Refrigerant isn't like scoring a brick of coke either! Tell me again why I'm asked to pay 3,000.00 dollars.
