That pipe is probably for exhaust.

Unless I’m missing something, it sounds like your furnace is drawing air from the closet and using that air for combustion as well. And by the looks of your return, it is not ducted and allows air into the closet via the hole in the wall with the filter?
Attatched is a pic of what I’m talking about. Sorry, not very knowledgeable when it comes to HVAC. The pipe to the right that comes down from the top.
But you are correct, my main return is ductless and pulls air from the bottom and goes up through the furnace. I just want to make sure that by trying to seal the closet door the furnace is sitting in well enough to get rid of some of the noise that I am not causing any issues, and the furnace can breath.

That 6” looks like exhaust. What is that larger vertical pipe to the right tvat isn’t attached?

The one not attached should be his fresh air for combustion. That top door of furnace that looks like stamped louvers should be open and how the combustion air gets into furnace.
