Michigan now, moving to Charlotte area.
Moving from Michigan and getting out of the worst economy in the US, and wondering what to expect. Good job opportunities? Michigan is at 7% unemployment and not getting better.

I will be down this Tuesday for a week to check things out and hopefully make a permanent move in Feb.

Looking forward to hitting the trails in the mountains. What are the Conservation Officers (DNR) like in NC?
Thanks all.

NC is up to 8% now. Good luck. All of the companies I have talked to in charlotte are on a hiring freeze until things level out.

Charlotte is a great place to be, but don't let the "low cost of living" crowd fool you, its not exactly cheap here.

The rangers and forest service guys never bother you up towards Sylva/Cullowhee when riding. As long as you're not trashing anything.

With URE and Tellico and a few other lesser known ORVs there is plenty of wheeling oppertunity without having to worry about the connies bothering you for off roading. what you do have to worry about is the eco freaks complaining about damage to the enviroment and shutting your legal trails down. just follow the rules and give as little ammo as possible.

Hi Steve. Up front I gotta say, Kudos to you for ponying up on a membership on your first day and w/o even moving here yet!

What kind of work are you in/looking for? Are you a pro chef?
Regarding employment, it really depends on the market/type. Some places in NC are really well known for biotech and computer businesses, others banking, or manufacturing etc. So, ideal locale could depend on thw field.
I actually had to leave NC recently to get a new job, but I'm chasing a career where the good positions are few and far between.

If I were looking for a new career/field to get into, it's be things that go well w/ a recession/depression... e.g. liquor sales and antidepressants, lol.

i just moved here from jersey and i like it so far..and all i have to say is what a change...the local people are so nice..pulling up at traffic lights to tell you a joke..no lie

to pulling over on some farm road to have a person pull up and ask you if everything was ok...that never happens i love it here

i am outside of charlotte

Welcome to the south.

It is so unfriendly up here that we carry waivers whenever we pull someone out of the ditch in the winter so we dont get sued. Pulling over to help someone is unheard of, unless its another Jeep or someone I know.

I go to school in PA and have to say it is entirely more friendly here in NC.

As said, where depends mostly on your line of work. The economy sucks about everywhere. Unless you have a very good reserve of cash I don't recommend moving until you have actual employment. It's a buyers market, and a sellers nightmare.

No no, I am coming down to make sure I have at least 2 jobs lined up in the restaurant field. I wont make the actual move until I have my ducks in a row and have good employment ready for me.

You need to move to Hickory,NC there must be job opportunities for chefs cause I have to wait at least 30 minutes to be seated and at least 30 min to get my food at any descent restraunt in Hickory. By the way us southern folk like discounts as good as we like to eat so let us know where you get a job and hook us up!!

Hickory is 45min-1hr NW of Charlotte It really puts you in a better central location between four wheeling spots if that matters.

Jacksonville must be one of the busiest places on earth for eating. Of course these aren't great restaraunts. Just the normal Chili's and Apple Bees but man there is always a wait of 30 minutes or more. They need to Expand the restaraunts to the west side of the city. If you want to start your own place in the food chain it will make it here.

send me your resume and I will get it to a freind that runs a restaurant.

no promises.. but I will pass it on.. and he is in greensboro
