OBX Question...

OK, so pavement ends in Cordova.
Can I bypass getting *ON* the beach and stick to the "roads" Or are they sketchier than the beach?

Just trying to avoid trailering all the way out (for what will be an hour stay) or taking/burying an 8500# truck to the frame... granted, it's 4wd, but stock sized ATs & zero recovery gear
No. Only hole in the fence is where you drive on to the beach

You have to use the 1st ramp at the end of the pavement to access the beach. This will take you North to the first crossover which will be very difficult to go over in 2wd.

See that's the point I was making....when the pavement ends, it ends ON the beach. See the pic of the stuck exploder above? That IS the "road" you have to navigate for 2.5 miles until you pass the Currituck preserve.

That IS the "road"

What you're seeing as the grid looks like this:

But for the most part, THIS is the "superhiway"

And by no coincidence, HE's who you'll see if you're out there in a 2wd

Generally the sand roads behind the dunes are worse cause the water will pool in them. Also if there is any winter storms coming in it will quickly make it hard to drive on the beach. I have been going up there for years and I wouldn't drive an awd up there no ground clearance really kills. Also if you get stuck you might be walking cause there isn't a lot of cell service up there. Also this time of year you can also drive on the beaches in corolla.

Well, if that big F'er can navigate the sand, should be fine locking the hubs & airing down the dually[/QUOTE]

Here's on bigger

Yup. He runs the beach all day and night.

Septic pumper runs several times a day too...he's driving a 2-1/2 ton dually 4x4 fulla poo!

AWD or 2wd is where you're screwed

Tow bill is minimum $350-400, there are only 2 companies that will come get you out on the beach. If it was summer you would have a better chance of someone helping you should you get in a bind but carova this time of year is pretty much a ghost town. We stay about 2 miles from the VA line every summer in various houses, we love it there. I don't have a problem in my 2500HD Duramax with 35x11.50 Terra Graps as long as they are aired down to 20-22lbs. There is no way in hell I would take an AWD car out there. Side note: I did see a Caddy Deville all the way at VA line this summer, but he got caught there when tide came in and had to leave it.
