Well damn. That sucks. And I have been considering just that - living in a camper for an undetermined length of time. I'll still consider it - perhaps with a bit more caution. Winters here are a little more sucky than they are in NC, so there is that to consider as well.

It really wouldn't be bad if there weren't the 4 of us, 3 dogs, and a cat. Just not enough room.

Happened to me when I was full timing in Louisiana. Got a surge protector directly after paying out for a new shore power cord (I wanted the molded ends due to corrosion resistance) mine was caused on the camper side of the receptacle.

Use dielectric grease (silicon paste) copeouse amounts on everything.
Cut down on air.
