What was up with the police roadblock at the entrance to Uwharrie this weekend? We left the trails and were stopped for a license, registration, and alcohol check. We weren't drinking, but the cop gave us a sideways glance when I told him, "We don't have any alcohol, but we have about 40 empty beer cans." After we explained that we were picking up trash as we were riding, he asked us if he could give us some cans that he had made people empty at the roadblock.

Is this an isolated thing or do they do roadblocks in that area a lot?

Also, thanks to the guy in the yellow jeep that pulled my 400 foot long truck off of a water berm on Rocky Mtn Loop today. I would have stopped to talk, but I couldn't get out of the truck because my parking brake got hammered at sometime during the day.

I've only seen a roadblock once, maybe 10years ago at the intersection of the first 2 dirt roads (the main road 576 and 555, the one going to Daniel/Cottonplace trailhead). It was a "big" weekend, either opening w/e or a holiday.

IMO it had something to do with the stables race, they had it so if you turned either way out of there u got pulled. Talked briefly with the officer and said the had the mobile scales on the way there also. I thanked him after he checked my reg and Liscnie and drove on.

We went through both check points one for license the other fro alcohol. Then on the way back home going through Salisbury. They had a major check point on Hwy 70 with 2 mobile command RVs.

one of the biggest improvements asked for at the URE planning meeting a couple years ago was more law enforcement presence. looks like they listened. =)

Where are the drunks going to ride in the batmobile? On the tail fins?

Great to hear!

This will keep many people interested in the sport and return trips to this location.

This is exactly what we need, more police and dmv/dot involvement.

I can't tell if you are being sarcastic or not, but personally, I think it IS a good idea for there to be some more police enforcement so that the Rangers will have LESS to enforce. I think if things that are illegal anywhere (drinking and driving, littering, property destruction, etc) are reduced by some police presence, then the Rangers might be able to lighten up on those who are there to have a good time the right way and we'd have less to worry about in terms of trail closures, etc.

I'm right there with ya. I was especially excited to hear that they were going to get the scales! Nothing like feeling safe...

It is all about the money

The main reason they were there was the event going on over at the Stables. We went through both check points on each side of the Forest, so there was no way of leaving the Forest without going through one or the other. Later that night they had moved down to 24/27 where the Yadkin River (if I remember correctly) bridges are. The same officer that ID'd me on 109 earlier in the day was the same one on 24/27. He even made a little joke, and I got to talk to him briefly. Officer Foote (the LEO for the Forest Service) was out there both times (109 and 24/27) so he was getting a late night in also. That reminds me he came through Arrowhead twice Friday night, so they were really stepping up patrols when its rare to see him come through at night period.

I think it's a good thing to have them there. In the late '90s we saw some crazy people on the trails. Some were "just having a good time" while others were reckless and put themselves and others on the trail in danger. I'll never forget seeing a built buggy roar past a family, who were on out of their stuck rig,way too closely. Almost clipped the 8 year old son. Scary as hell.
