Possibly moving to Greensboro

Some of you all know me from PBB and I was referred here by some of your members.

I am quite possibly moving to the Greensboro area and would like some community information. Mainly, I need to know of a good neighborhood within 20-25 miles of 7838 McCloud Rd, Greensboro. It needs to have good schools for my girls, 8 and 16 to attend and housing should be between $100-175k.

I'm not concerned about how far Tellico, Windrock, Uwharrie or any other wheelin spot is. I've lived in NC before, albeit on the coast and know where those places are, I'm just looking for community information and the "right" spots to live.

Thanks

Welcome back. Looks like a lot of community information at gcsnc.com I'm sure other folks here live closer and can give you the lowdown.

Dang bro! Has it been 3 years already? When are you splitting the Rock?

Looks like the addy you gave is the Reserve Center... guessing you'll need to get there for drill weekends? Or are you going to be on staff?

Anyways, from there, you have several choices... some answers regarding "where in GSO" have been given here... Kernersville & some areas of W-S are also within your 20-25 mile striking distance. I live just outside that range(?) near Rural Hall/Bethania... decent schools & most housing well within your budget.

I work just across the street (I-40) from you. You would be within a short drive to anywhere in the NorthWest side of Greensboro. Homes can be pricey, but the schools are suppose to be good and traffic flows decent on Bryon Blvd to get you out towards work. They are in the process of adding a second runway to the GSO airport for FedEx. They are building a major hub at the airport and will be flying many flights in and out during the night. I would avoid buying anywhere within a few miles or more of the airport. I have noise cone projection maps from when I was looking for a house that I can email you if you are interested. Many of my co-workers live in HighPoint and Kernersville. Apparently many nice neighborhoods have been springing up in those areas and they are very affordable. There are some nice neighborhoods up in the Oak Ridge area as well where many of my co-workers live. Traffic on 68 is a problem though anytime close to rush hour.

The "RIGHT" spot to move to may be several miles away from Greensboro. Somewhere without nosy neighbors that will may or may not like your Jeep messing up their idea of Paradise. HOA rules, crime rates and taxes should be much lower outside the city also. There are a few nice places south of Greensboro that are worth looking into.

Yep Dave, three years already. I should be leaving sometime in May, spend a wee bit of time in Lousisiana, then up to the Triad area to shop for a house. We're not going to throw away the BAH on some rental property, we're going to become homeowners;)

Anyway, the distance I'm looking for is because I'll be commuting via bicycle at least three days a week and 20-25 miles is a nice little ride, any longer than that and it starts cutting into too much sleep time. So traffic shouldn't be that much of a worry for me, remember, I'm coming from Okinawa and traffic is horrendous here.

Thanks again for all the input so far.

Will be good to have you back stateside... and close by to boot!

Let me know when your coming to scope things out... we have *plenty* of room and will gladly put you (all) up at the house. As our realtor lady owns the local "For sale by Owner" rag (& drove what I thought was a pretty hard bargain for us), LMK if you need a hand with listings when it gets a bit closer...

Try to get them in Northwest or the new Northern when its built. I went to western guilford and my brother is still there and its really going to shit.

I really like NE Davidson County, the schools will be a little more "redneck" than urban (Carhartt instead of...whatever urban crap they wear)...but they have good scores on the schools. Property taxes are 1/2 of what they are in Guilford / Forsyth County, and less likely to end up with HOA issue.s

Would be a nice ride straight up Sandy Ridge Road to your work, and is prob 20-25 miles of well used but not terribly overused roads for the bike. And let me say this...wowsers, never heard the 20/25 miles for BIKE ride x 3 per week before, that is a new one. (My lardbutt is slowing shrinking with waterobics, lol)

I live in Kernersville, my neighborhood is pretty decent and in the range you are talking about and HOA has not been too bad. Garages have 7' doors, I know my YJ with 36s fit, barely but kept it inside. (Otherwise, would need fence to park in yard) That is Windfall, just off Hastings Hill Road, Korner Rock Road is the street we are on.

Oak Ridge is nice (but may not be far enough away...Kville/my house is only about 12-15ish from your work if I was guessing) but getting pricy quick.

Stokesdale might be perfect mileage wise and you can get a decent house/lot up there, but coming down 68 would be insane on a bike, would need to find backroads.

Been here since 88, glad to answer questions as they come up...not sure if we have met or not, have camped at URE when Dave and the other Jarheads were there so might have.

Rich, good to hear you are heading back Stateside. Once you get the Jeep rolling again, we will need to do a "welcome home" service at URE, ah-la Peppin's going away or Pat and Niel's homecoming...Give us another chance to NOT see the Pumpkin...

I'm over in Chapel Hill. Too far from GSO to be much help with the area (I escaped GSO about 15 years ago). But if you need anything on this end, holler and I'll do what I can.

Hey Rich,

i met you a few years back at the DR. I've been looking aound at where to buy a house in the Triad area, and scholls are a big concern of mine too.

Best schools are in Summerfield and Oakridge. Oakridge is gonna be hard pressed to find a decent place for that money, but you can. It's just exploding with big nice houses and getting expensive. Summerfield would be a GREAT choice it's slated to be the next area that explodes so the prices will be going up and you can turn some good money on them in a few years. Two sights for you to look at for houses and schools:

I live in Kernersville. Picked the area cause the schools were decent, Housing is priced in the mid 100's and traffic is not terrible getting into Winston or G'boro on I-40. I live off Hastings Hill Rd. and it is a nice neighborhood. 4 bed, 2 1/2 bath, 2 car garage. I'll sell it to ya for $175k. It's time to build again!

I appreciate all the responses and am looking/checking the market of Summerfield, Kernersville, Oakridge and Stokesdale. So far, I'm liking Summerfield and Stokesdale, but I'll have to look over everything with the wife when I get back to Okinawa. Alot depends on her and what school is willing to hire her and what schools she wants to put the kids in.

And unlike Pat, my Jeep never stopped rolling, just stopped going off-road:fuck-you:

You will at least want to change the fluids...:flipoff2:

My BIL has had it the whole time, this guy doesn't even know how to put it in 4wd:lol:, but he does know how to take it to a jiffy lube place and get the fluids changed;)

I'd venture to say, when I get back home in May that all I'll have to do is give it a once over and I could drive it to G'boro:bounce: Besides, my FIL won't let my BIL screw up my vehicles, and FIL is the only one that drives Theresa's P/S, he won't let anyone else drive it:lol:

Cool. Post up when you are in country, You know we will all help out with whatever you need. When you have the time...We will plan a URE or Callalantee weekend to welcome you all home.

Got the official orders, I'm coming to Greensboro. I'll be leaving Okinawa mid-May, doing a stop off in Hawaii for a few days, then a few days in Louisiana, then up to NC to hopefully buy a nice house in Kernersville. Looking forward to the move

It looks like you've decided on K-ville, but Hwy 158 in Rockingham co. is a good area. Close to Summerfield. There is also a new elementry school on 158 a few miles outside of Reidsville.
I moved to Reidsville from Greensboro and its a whole lot better.
Anyway that's my.02

Thanks for serving,
Bishop

ps Do you like Japan?

Out of all the places, it seems Kernersville has been given to us as a suggestion by more people.

I'm on Okinawa, not mainland, and I'd like it more if I got to spend more time here. By the time I leave, after 36 months of being stationed here, I'll have over 20 months deployed time.....so, that's kinda left a bad taste in my mouth for the place......but I'd still recommend it as it is an experience;)
