Lookout shoals. Was 8.5ft over the dam.
Dam! Looks like they were thinking about opening a 5th one!Oxford dam. During the storm, they had 4 gates open.

A friend has a camper on hickory. He said his dock and jet ski lift were well under water (~3ft) Thurs morning. They are known to have issues with gates. A few years back they couldn't open enough and there was severe flooding...
Umm... the last 24 months have been foooked upYou'd think they would have a better understanding of the water levels by now.
I understand that. But they have been operating that dam for a long time. To your point though, they have had big storms lately that could provide data on the top end of the spectrum. They also control the lakes/dams before it and after it. I would think they would know how fast they can raise and lower the water levels based on rainfall, even if its interpolated. I also know it's a balance of all the lakes together.Umm... the last 24 months have been foooked up
I don't think nostradamus could have seen this much moisture
Darn, wish you had stopped by & grabbed the seat & bumper! I watched News 1/2 a day, on the roads & creeks!I85 in Charlotte on my way back north after retrieving a Jeep.

They didn't Learn much from the last Storm!Millersville Rd between Conover & Taylorsville. It was just redone a few months back.
Forecaster in Charlotte, said the math was 24 BILLION, gallons of water, for Charlotte! {Might have included Mecklenburg Co., not sure. Charlotte almost covers Meck Co.}They didn't Learn much from the last Storm!
Not trying to be a smartass...but wouldn't it just be a calculation of average rainfall total (with rate being a factor) over a given surface area (im sure its a well known basin size), and subtract the absorption rate? Obviously not a perfect science, but it seems like it would be pretty easy to get +/-25%, which could then be corrected +/- a gate or two at the real world observation point.Understand....I'm not trying to be a combative....and I'm NO expert. But the last 2 years have baffled local meteorologists. I can see dam operators cross eyed as hell trying to figure out these rates per hour. There's simply no presidents for what's taken place. Kinda hard to reference a chart for averages when you're literally making history
Oxford dam. During the storm, they had 4 gates open. The river level was up 25ft under the bridge.
That's the issue..what's average in THIS situation?!?!wouldn't it just be a calculation of average rainfall total
Yes, but rain gauges are cheap and we're not looking for perfection. A couple dozen placd throughout the drainage basin should be pretty cheap and plenty close enough. That's the issue..what's average in THIS situation?!?!
And Nixon was framed
Damn.Future driveway entrance from a couple weeks ago, and one from this am after the water started going down

Sounds like you might want to rethink the drive, or figure out how to divert more runoff.Future driveway entrance from a couple weeks ago, and one from this am after the water started going down

It's not my runoff. The dan river had nowhere to go but up. There is a river gauge almost directly across from me and this year has had 3 of the top 10 flood events and 2 top 5 events(this was 5th highest crest recorded). I plan to build this 600ft section of road up to stay above water in all previous floods except for the worst that was in 72, it was 3ft higher than the 2nd worst that happened in February this year. After the first 600' I will be 120' higher in elevation for the remaining 2000' of driveway.Sounds like you might want to rethink the drive, or figure out how to divert more runoff.
Any video or audio ?
Spoke to a DOT bridge guy about that same thing. He said bridge it's designed to takethat punishment because it's at the dam.If it had been up to me, I would have Closed that bridge, Hwy 16 I suppose, until the flooding slowed. That's the type situation that the Bridge collapse's with drivers on it!
