To start this off I was looking for a way to haul camping gear to and from events and Wheelin destinations with my TJ. The trailer started life as a Highway Patrol Radar trailer that the POPO would setup to flash up your speed. I bought the trailer off of someone on CL that had started to convert to an off-road expedition trailer. Here is how he had it setup below. I will be putting a awning on it but no plans for a rooftop tent.

I will be starting the work that I plan in a few days as I’m waiting on brown Santa to drop off all new lights inside and out.

Does it still have the tent from the previous owner? Why get rid of it?
I didn’t buy the rooftop tent or awning from the guy as he was very proud of them. I can’t stand rooftop tents as I am 6’3” and 275lbs and every rooftop tent I’ve seen is built for 5’8” 150 lbs. I have a hell of a nice tent that I can replace 8-10 times for the price of a rooftop tent.

Here’s some pics of what I’m starting with. To start with I have to change the door locks as there are no keys for what’s on there. Also changing all the trailer lights to LED to include a reverse light and lighting inside the trailer along with some rock lights under it. All the lights will run thru a 6 pin trailer plug from the jeep. It has a vented section of floor that has to be welded up to prevent it filling with water in the event of a creek crossing. Also going to get @BUCKEYE PERFORMANCE INC. to build a extended tongue and a offroad hitch for if I ever drag it up any trails.

Any competent locksmith can make a key for that lock for less money than a replacement......

X2, or if there are numbers on the face of the lock cylinder, you can likely get replacements from the manufacturer for cheap.

Outside dimensions of the box are 68”L 48” W 39” T. This is only for hauling/ storage and a trail kitchen setup eventually. Basically a bunk house for @Dylan W.

That's what I figured but wasnt sure about the window.

Might be better to make that a door or slide out stove/sink/shower.

Thinking something like this that will pull out of the drivers side door so it’s under the awning. These things are stupid expensive but I’ve got a buddy that’s a hell of a cabinet/ furniture maker that said no problem just get the materials. Probably be a year or so before that happens though as I’m going to get everything the way I want it before the kitchen happens

Got a little shop time in to get started on the LED trailer lights and wiring. Installed the tail lights, tag light, and the reverse light bar. Also wired in the 6 pin connector on the trailer along with a pigtail that can be unplugged on both ends. I am using a 6 pin to be able to wire for reverse lights, interior lights, and under carriage lighting controlled by switches inside the trailer along with all the required DOT lighting.

Got the expanded metal floor section cut out this evening and ready for a plate to be welded in. Also made some protection out of 1” tube for the reverse led bar. Still have to paint the tubing but will wait till the work is done on the tongue and hit it all at once.

Worked on the wiring a little bit and plan to finish it up this weekend. Made the trip to the tag office to do the tag and title work. On Wednesday the floor will be welded up along with building a new removable tongue.

That trailer is awesome! Sub'ed!
Thanks. Got a lot of work to get it like I want it in the end but it will be ready to use this coming week. Got a Wheelin trip at AOP in a couple weeks that I’ll be hauling all our gear in the trailer. All wiring and metal fab will be complete in a few days. After the AOP trip I’ll start finishing out the interior of the trailer and then probably next winter try to build a trail kitchen into it.

Got all the wiring finished today except the rock lights I’m putting under it for ground lighting in camp. All the running lights, blinkers, tag, and reverse are working like a charm. The reverse light has 2 hot wires on it 1 is a brighter output than the other. I used the brightest output as reverse and wired the other into the switch for the under lighting. Also wired in the interior LED’s on their own switch. I really like the way this trailer is turning out so far. Got a little welding to get done this week on the tongue extension and floor.

I’m curious about this part. Why make it removable?
I will be using a 2” coupler for the highway and a off-road 3 axis coupler for articulation to prevent binding. The 3 axis coupler will be built down the road sometime as I don’t plan on the trailer being on a trail this year. Another added benefit of the removable tongue is to prevent possible theft at events.

Sounds pretty cool. Can’t wait to see it all done. Although, referring to theft, I’m pretty sure you and I could pick that thing up and throw it in the bed of a truck. Better add lots of weight to it.

You are correct about that but most thieves are to lazy for that. As it sits now it’s 550 lbs and after the work I’m doing I figure no more than 650 lbs. can’t even feel it behind the Jeep the way it is now.
