Project Saving Silverman

Well just to put this out there, evreytime I have broken or mangled the body it has been on easy, leaf looking trails LOL!! Following along, love a mild old Toyota build!

Hell I did my worst drivetrain damage ever pulling away from a stop sign after work

This bad boy popped up on FB today for half the cost of buying new from TG. Wasn’t high on my purchase priority list, but the price was right…so now it belongs to me. Definitely gonna hack that dumb big ass pointy stinger off and bend up a much more subtle stinger for it. Should be good enough for mounting my 9,000 lb Warn.

This is my second purchase for the 4runner. First was a battery so I could roll down the back glass and get the cargo area cleaned out. I’ve had my shop fan moving air through the truck for the past 24 hours with all the windows open, trying to dry everything out.

I think my next move will be to strip the interior for a deep clean and get the funk out of this thing.

Warning: long and somewhat sappy post with lots of words. I know most of ya’ll can’t read though, so you’ll just have to skip over this one and wait for future posts with pics.

Now that I’ve had a chance to get a good look at this truck, I want to take a step back here for a second and say that it is evident Tim took really good care of this thing. I know I ragged on it a bit, but in all fairness this thing is in really good shape in general…not just for its age or mileage, but in overall condition.

The condition of the carpet is typical of a 36 year old truck with 349k miles, and was most likely well on its way to its current condition when he originally bought it. Same with the arm rest. Other than some mild staining of the upholstery, everything else inside is solid. I have no doubt that my gf will science the shit out of the seats and interior trim, and they will truly highlight this truck’s actual condition. I think the exterior pics speak for themselves. It will need new weatherstripping and window gaskets at some point, but that’s really it. If I’m feeling froggy, maybe it’ll get a light wet sanding and an unprofessional clear coat jobber. Definitely keeping the hood patina!

Sure, it had some stuff inside it, but that comes with the territory when you’re dealing with ANY vehicle that has sat for a while. The vast majority of the items in it were being used daily right up until it got parked. A lot of the tools and parts and consumables were for things that were actively being maintained or in the process of being repaired. Little things like replacement bulbs, relays, interior trim pieces and fluids for routine service items. And other things like a new fuel pump, new drive belts, spring packs for a solid axle swap, a new clutch kit and flywheel for a manual transmission swap.

Other items he already has for it that I still have to get out of his way include:
Complete and matching set of FJ80 axles
Front spring hanger cross member
5-speed manual transmission
A mostly complete tcase that we recently robbed a couple parts from to fix the case in his black truck (previously pictured)
A spare hard top with good glass (just in case I do something irresponsible)
Brand new aluminum radiator
Probably some other things that I’m forgetting about, or I don’t even know he has for it

Tim had big plans for this thing but not enough hours in the day, days in the week, weeks in the month, or months in the year to do it all. If my memory serves me correctly, I think this truck drove its last mile right about the time he started his own surveying company. I got nothing but love and mad respect for my brother from another mother. As guys, I don't think we tell our dude friends how much they mean to us (or maybe its just me). For me, this truck is an opportunity to take a long walk down memory lane to a time chalked full of late nights and long weekends of wrenching with the hardest working, most solid give-you-the-shirt-off-his-back dude I’ve ever known. Words can’t accurately describe how excited I am to work on this truck and turn Tim’s vision into a reality.

The next time you all load up your rigs and head out on the trail, throw an extra beer in your cooler (preferably a yeungling) just in case you cross paths with @DieselToyPullr.

Planning to strip the interior this weekend. Any recommendations for places to source a decent carpet kit from? Also, what are everyone’s thoughts on under carpet products for sound deadening and/or insulation? What’s good? Is it worth the cost and effort?

On those older tin can trucks there MIGHT be some "Sound deadening" under the carpet. Looks like a rock solid glued on sheet. Get some dry ice and sit it on those pieces and they'll chip away pretty easily in my experience. Then just hit the areas with remaining glue with an orbital sander. Kilmat or Dynamat, or I'm sure there is some wuhan version available. It all is really there just to keep the old tin from vibrating which dampens a lot of exhaust and road noise. But it does work. IMO on a 4Runner its going to be minimal unless you do the whole back of the cargo area/back seat.

Carpet kit, any of the pre-formed ones seem to be the same. Just difference in the carpet pile and how seams are sewed up if at all.

I usually clean the floors up very well. Paint with a “spray one bed liner” then use the foil backed sound deadener. Helps a ton, have done many cars. Last one I did I used the Amazon brand and it worked as well as the name brands. There is different thickness available for them. I will try to get a pic of the can of paint that I have found to be best. I use it on my frames and everything with very good results

These sound deadened are made of butyl rubber that takes decades to dry out and sticks to the surface, they will also prevent rusty floorboards in the long term on some vehicles the only floorboard areas not rusty are under these

I ordered a complete kit for mine from stockinteriors, it came with everything from the front to the rear cargo area and trimmed it to fit, its been in 2 different 4runners now for the last 4 years and has held up great for the price, want to say i paid like $350 shipped. Worst part is trimming it to fit to perfection but well worth it in the end. I got the heat and insulation with it as well and have been very happy with it. Can't find any from the front seats back but ill dig for some more pictures later

As much as I love the idea of putting a cage in it, I also don’t really want a cage in it, lol. They take up a lot of room, and these trucks aren’t super big inside. Im also not trying to trash this body, and that’s inevitable if I am riding stuff where a cage might be needed.

Solid info! I have actually been seeing good reviews about stockinteriors. I haven’t fully decided if I want to carpet the cargo area or bed line it yet.

Bed liner the cargo area.

Option c:

Someone did a long term write up on pirate and was really happy with it. Pretty cheap and cut to fit without much hassle.

This stuff is made to be in the sun get wet and take a beating on boat decks. Is insulating. I have seen 10+ year old product on a charter fishing boat that just gets hosed down and left in the sun in Florida, still kept its color and held up. ANC it comes in all types of camp and patterns of you want

I hadn’t thought of this, but I like the idea of it. I wonder how well it would conform and stick to the flutes of the corrugated floor pan. I can also see myself installing it not perfectly straight and the lines in the floor covering being slightly skewed relative to the flutes. And I think that will bother me.

I’m kinda leaning in this direction. Or doing carpet and a cheap rubber bed mat over top of it when I need to load parts or tools or camping gear in the back.

Got the seats and center console out last night. Other than the carpet being very stained, it is very much in tact. Still gonna replace it tho.

*How does one go about determining what the original carpet color was? Or do you just guess when you order replacement?

I peeked under the carpet in a couple spots and the floor pan appears to be in great shape. I’ll pull the carpet and trim panels this weekend and get a more complete look at it. The rear heater is gonna have to go bc dual cases. The switches in the center console for the rear window and wiper don’t work. Would like to get that figured out at some point.

*Anybody have a center console for a 1st gen 4runner without rear heat laying around?

I put kilmat on my rear floor and this over top, not as corrugated as yours but it conformed to the ribbing. Might want to get some with a pattern cut to make it more pliable. It won’t get 100% coverage in corners, but if you take acetone you can remove the logo from kilmat and it’s a nice brushed aluminum look. The glue on the cheapest amazon version is sticky as shit
