Hey all, it's ruckus raising time. Raleigh city council is trying to slip an asinine new fee through, hoping that nobody is paying attention. Let's give 'em some hell and get it stopped.
In all honesty, the actual dollar amount involved is pretty nominal. But we all know that once a fee is on the books, it will just creep up year after year. And besides, even if it was only a nickel, this is wrong purely on principle.
Here's the deal. A few whiney home owners over near NC State are pissed that the kids who rent over there throw loud parties. The proposed solution is to have every other renter in the city pay a new tax to cover the cost of dealing with it. Basically, they're saying that since a few renters are causing a problem, all other renters should pay to fix it. It hardly seems like a problem that should need any new funding at all, but even if this really does need to be funded, the home owners and renters alike should all pay for it. But then, none of us renters are on the city council. One of those whiney home owners that's having the problem is.
The proposed fee (read TAX) would actually be assessed against landlords. Obviously, the landlords will just pass it along though, so let's call it what it is, a renter's tax. The money raised through this tax will fund a four person task force to deal with landlords who have noisy tenants. As we all know, when a tenant is noisy, it's clearly the landlord's fault.
And even if you do buy the notion that we need this task force, then you'd also have to agree that the task force would be a public service. Last time I checked, public services are supposed to be funded... BY THE ENTIRE PUBLIC.
Here's the web site.

If you think this kinda stinks, you can send the form letter they provide. If you really think it's nuts, you can write something of your own.
And if this kinda shit just makes you want to pull your hair out, well, I'll see you downtown on July 1.
