Hey all, it's ruckus raising time. Raleigh city council is trying to slip an asinine new fee through, hoping that nobody is paying attention. Let's give 'em some hell and get it stopped.

In all honesty, the actual dollar amount involved is pretty nominal. But we all know that once a fee is on the books, it will just creep up year after year. And besides, even if it was only a nickel, this is wrong purely on principle.

Here's the deal. A few whiney home owners over near NC State are pissed that the kids who rent over there throw loud parties. The proposed solution is to have every other renter in the city pay a new tax to cover the cost of dealing with it. Basically, they're saying that since a few renters are causing a problem, all other renters should pay to fix it. It hardly seems like a problem that should need any new funding at all, but even if this really does need to be funded, the home owners and renters alike should all pay for it. But then, none of us renters are on the city council. One of those whiney home owners that's having the problem is.

The proposed fee (read TAX) would actually be assessed against landlords. Obviously, the landlords will just pass it along though, so let's call it what it is, a renter's tax. The money raised through this tax will fund a four person task force to deal with landlords who have noisy tenants. As we all know, when a tenant is noisy, it's clearly the landlord's fault.

And even if you do buy the notion that we need this task force, then you'd also have to agree that the task force would be a public service. Last time I checked, public services are supposed to be funded... BY THE ENTIRE PUBLIC.

Here's the web site.

If you think this kinda stinks, you can send the form letter they provide. If you really think it's nuts, you can write something of your own.

And if this kinda shit just makes you want to pull your hair out, well, I'll see you downtown on July 1.

IMO, I don't live anywhere near Raleigh, and don't rent yet, but thats stupid as hell. If they are going to have this task force it should come out of the tax that everyone pays every year to that hell hole of a town. Or, since the home owners are the ones bitching, the homeowners should be the only ones paying.

I don't like to hear trains passing by while I sleep, so I didn't buy a house near the Train Tracks. Nor did I want to hear Airplanes, so there's no airport near my house.

SO WTF are you doing buying a house near a University if you don't want to hear College Kids? It's not like NCSU just sprang up the other day.

dumb fawkin people... :shaking:

because they want the high property value that comes with living in that area.. but nothing else

We have a task force here to deal with loud parties.....Its called POLICE!

If its in the country its called SHERIFF!

Y'all city folks come up with the dumbest stuff:flipoff2:

It's just another example of the gubberment types on all levels trying to squeeze every dime possible out of us taxpayers! :poop:

email sent.

the cops who bust up our parties now are more than adequate, we dont need any more.

Is this what you meant to say. If so you must be and idiot.

Task force of 4 people...
now I'm sure they will be underpaid social workers or similar, not huge salary.
but by the time you have 4 salaries, benefits, facilities and operation expenses, and any kind of budget to carry out anything, this is not a cheap ordeal.
How many rentals can there be in Raleigh to cover this at $10/pop?

EDIT - according to 2000 census, ~51,000 rental housholds. $10 ea, 1/2 $mil budget. That seems about right.

Now of those 51,000... how many are "problems"?

It seems like a better idea would be to fine the heck out of everybody that gets busted. Is there a part of 100 people? That has to be a good $7500 right there. Still raging 45 minutes later? Bust them again. Two parties in a night? Now we're talking money.

Deal with the problem and let the problem people cover the costs.
