There are a lot of different aspects and avenues. A good NDT/NDE (Non-Destructive Examination/Testing) guy generally has a good bit of field experience and practical welding, as well as classroom learning and working alongside a crusty old guy for a few years. I have no idea what the best "path" is to get there.

The best inspectors I've dealt with were either welders or something adjacent for at least 10 years, and wanted to learn more and add another feather to their cap. Which is the point I find myself at currently.

Are you seeking certification through AWS?

I have thought about similar or a getting a classification as an AWS instructor. Then pursuing private professional level teaching.

Also are you looking to examine weldments for end use or also certifying individuals?

Yes, im looking to get my AWS CWI cert. At this time its purely for D1.1 weldment inspection, since that's what we do. Our shop manager is a CWI, but we don't have anyone in the field to look over welds and actually have the backing of a certification. I already do the pre inspection and walk with the 3rd party inspector on projects, but I dont have the paperwork to actually put weight behind it.

That seems (to me) to be a great deal of responsibility. I mean one bad weld that you passed as good could really be a huge fubar

If he's not certified, he can't really be held liable. Difference between a PE and non-PE signing off on something. Also, he's there with 3rd party inspector which is who would carry the primary responsibility.

It's SLOW at work this week. Walked next door to my shop to grab some brake cleaner and found an Eaton E Locker I forgot I had. Found it for $300 on another forum years ago.
Decided to install it in Golda Jip in between orders today. May do the wiring later this evening.
