Indeed. I'll say that thing was a pretty interesting home booty fab contraption.... A big A frame on 4 wheels on rotating casters, no wheel locks or anything. But you can't see is the whole yard is a pretty steep hill. Takes some creativity and profanity to roll around the yard and keep put, but damn nice to have.
At first were a bit skeptical of the manual chain lift, but it probably had a 100:1 gearing or something and worked great.
Once we had it out and dropped it on the ground, they just used a forklift to haul up to the cashier and dropped in my truck. Easy peasy.
It's called a chain fall, very common back in the day. I think I still have one

Do they use a worm gear? Aside from the insane gear erduction it would also prevent it from being backdriven and falling. First I've used one in this kind of application.

I've no idea the inner workings. But I've got 4 in the work truck and we have a connex full of them from out field crews. They'll wear your arms out flying stairs up 3 floors, buy it beats the alternative. They finally got smart and bought a 150' electric chainfall. Throw up a beam across the shaft and you're set for 10 floors.

Ah so it has that little pawl in it to prevent backdrive.
I can't quite wrap my head around how it can gown both ways manually though.
... I'm really curious why a series of srockets/gears is preferable to a worm though. You could achieve the same thing with only 2 parts.
