Anyone have experience with a slide in style truck camper? Do they all have showers? What are some things to look for in one? I'm considering getting a cheap one $2k or less which probably means pretty old.

Self contained can have different meanings. Usually, it has a water system, and power system.
A lot of slide in campers have a shower, stove, furnace, crapper,Fridge, (some fridges run on propane and electric? bed and lights, most slide In's do not have a generator. Having a generator is no biggie really, a lot have a battery to run lights, and furnace blower. If you have a backup battery you can charge one on your trail rig, and just rotate them out. I know that's what Larry Smith did when he had his. There isn't a great amount of room, but if you can handle a little cramped space it's a good choice.
This time of year is a good time to buy one. Seems they are cheaper.
Good luck

Most campers are pretty close to the same
I have a slide that was made in 1974it is a very light model compared to
The newer ones.
Mine does not have a shower or a bath, but that has never been problem yet.
The one thing you want to make sure is that theroof does not leak, and try to find the lightest one you can.
In my opinion it was one of the best things I did. My wife loves staying warm and comfy.

I love mine although sometimes I wish it was a little bigger. Mine only sleeps 3. Mine fits completely in the bed of the truck. I liked this idea because there was no worries with towing. Some of them stick over so far that you have to have a long hitch extension. I might trust a short hitch extension, but some I have seen are over 30 inches long. No way am I going to pull my rig behind a 30 inch hitch extension. Maybe a couple 4wheelers, but no more.
