Checking out a few tow rigs this weekend, should I eliminate any of these right off the bat? They are all within a few thousand dollars of each other, priced high to low ($27k to $21k):

2008 Silverado 4 door 2500 diesel 111,000
2007 F250 4 door diesel 107,000
2007 F250 4 door diesel 103,000
2007 F250 4 door FX4 diesel 116,000
2007 F250 4 door Harley Davidson 143,000
2006 F250 4 door Harley Davidson 156,000

Well....would you rather have a 6.0 or a Duramax?

Doesn't matter. I just need it to get me around 8,000 miles or so a year towing a TJ or two for around 4,000 of those miles.

I'm going to GUESS that they're all 4wd. I would certainly hope so anyway. Maybe I'm just partial to GMs, but it seems like the 08 Duramax would be less of a worry. I could be wrong though. I'm not bashing the 6.0, but there are common items on them that need to be monitored and kept up frequently.

06-07 ford 6.0's were one of the best motors Forms ever had. EGR delete whatever you get just to be safe though. I am partial to Fords, and am of the type that thinks a tow rig shouldn't have IFS. I would not worry about the mileage on any of the above, just buy the nicest one for the $$$

Like others have said, all will be fine, but I'd go with the 08 Duramax. I was never a big fan of the Duramax until I bought my 03, and now it would be hard for me to consider something else.

I would knock the Harley Davidson edition's off the list just on principle, but I wouldn't buy a Ducati Duramax either. Unrelated branding annoys me.

My wife likes special editions of whatever, so those appeal to her. The Duramax is $7k more than the cheapest 250 on that list, wasn't sure if it was worth that big of a difference. I have no brand loyalty, so like mentioned earlier, just hoping to get some good bang for the buck. Thanks for the feedback so far, I see these types of threads pop up a good bit and there are always examples of trucks that people say they wouldn't touch, just making sure these didn't fit in that category.

Save the $7000 get a ford with the knowledge you may have to spend $4-5000 to make it bullet proof later on and still have money in pocket over the chevy... The chevy will ride smoother imo

The Chevy is going to hold its value a lot better than a ford 6.0, as you are already seeing, when you go to sell.

I used to be a ford fan, but after owning two 6.0s, no way I'd buy another.

find a 99-03 powerstoke with the 7.3
i got a 2000 f350 powerstroke DRW ext cab 4x4 with 120,000 miles & only paid $10,500 for it
you should be able to find a low mile 7.3 4 door for way less than $27,000 ( around $17,000)

I read it somewhere that statistically speaking, the 06-07 Ford 6.0's were in the top three of all ford engines (gas or diesel), I think it had to do with warranty repair. When I say the top three that is for LEAST warranty work. Notice I did say still do EGR delete. Heck, for the $7k cheaper price you can do a lot of work on a 6.0 to bulletproof it...

I didn't notice the price in your first post. I'd be looking for an 07 Duramax for around $15-20k. They are out there.

id stay away from the 6.0s have a friend that runs a ford dealership said he wouldn't sell one to someone he knows. they all end up messing up. not if but when. depends on how hard you run them and what not. if you could find a 6.4 it might be worth the extra money. but thats just my opinion 7.3 still best diesel built by ford got three all over 250,000 miles oil change and go highest one got 564,000

oh yeah??!?!?

I've had an autotrader alert for all 4x4 duramaxes within 100miles of Statesville, at <$20k going for the past two months.... I've seen about (2) 07 models, and those had 200k+ miles

Narrow that down to either black or white models and you get zero.

Let me throw this out there.... No more milage than you will be driving, consider a v10. Trucks will be way cheaper, gas being cheaper offsets the milage differnce(20% cheaper gas makes of 20% of milage difference)......
