I fried my power steering pump a couple of months ago and just getting around to fixing it. I've been doing some research and planning to add hydro assist so ive went ahead and added everything I was gonna need to do that later on. Anyways a lot of people say that running a smaller pulley helps at low speed and idling while wheeling. The two brands that everyone suggested are genright and psc both are over the $100 mark. Genright says there pulley is 10% smaller than stock, stock pulley is 5.313 in. So it's 4.8xx went to the parts house and found a pulley that was 4.818 in for $20 forgot to get the part number because it had to be ordered but will get that when I get it Tuesday.

In for results.

What jeep pump are you running.

My stock yj pump died last fall at ivy branch, and replaced with a parts store pump.

The replacement pulley has holes in it and is steel. The holes make installation and removal of the pump much easier.

My factory pulley was plastic and solid.

My factory yj pump was great even at idle.

The replacement pump works great at 1500 rpms and up, but is weak at idle. I'm interested to hear your results and application / part number.

My next step is to shim the spring and or drill out the orfice.

It is for a 92 xj. So I'm assuming it should work for most modenish jeeps. It's slow to turn at idle. I'm planning on drilling out the orifice out as well. The people on other forums said it was a very noticeable difference a with just changing the pulley size

This pulley has to much offset compared to stock so it threw the belt

Is it possible to flip it around? That would be lucky, but worth a quick measurement.

Or some offset pump brackets. Spacers on the pump to move it rearward on the existing brackets?

I could flip it and it probably work but if it didn't I couldn't get it back off. Pump is bolted on both sides so that's a no go

Looked at it again think I figured out how to flip it over and install it and be able to get it back off if it doesn't work.

new pulley compared to stock and the part number.

I'm gonna change it next week still have a lot to do to get the Jeep ready so I'll have a good comparison to a stock pump with stock pulley with it drilled out, and next weekend with the smaller pulley

Can you space the pump backerds?

Does it have a collar on both sides for the clamshell puller? I thought those pulleys had a slight taper to the bore, but I could be wrong on that point.

What a fantastic thread. I'm so glad you decided to post this without any prompting.

Hold yer horses. We haven't gotten to the "it works!" part yet.

Did you guys keep your old pump? If so you might can compare the pistons and springs between them. I suspect they are different.

I am planning to use the 4.5" pump on my next build. I wouldn't use it on something that is going to see a lot of street time, or high RPMs. It will quickly overdrive the pump and burn it up sooner.

Pump on mine is stock replacement with a lifetime warranty. If I burn it up no problem. This is my second one was just seeing if I could get some better steering for cheap
