Spare Change

Got the A pillar legs cut and figured out. Gotta wait on getting some slug material to connect them to the b pillar hoop then I can figure out the roof bar and upper windshield spreader. No pictures.
Then I moved on to a little side task. Patched a small corner rust spot on the windshield frame. It’s not pretty but it’s not a rust hole anymore and I feel more comfortable having the company come out the windshield in after I get the cage in and welded so I have better access to weld it.

So the wife messed her back up last night and I stayed home today to help out/be close to home in case she needed anything. So, to waste time but stick close I pushed the Toyota in front of the garage (having a tractor made this SO much easier. I had already got the bpillar/X brace in the truck but it was time to use the rest of the cage that I got from @DannyH. And here is what I ended up with. I didn’t bend anything just used what was there. The A pillars are on 4bolt plates that connect to the floorboard body mount and there will be sammich plates under them, same with the B pillar. The three legs I had cut got slugged and plug welded slug material provided by @WARRIORWELDING . Heavy bevels at all joints. I’m no pro but at least it’s not trampoline toob.

I did some rough beer math but honestly I just got the seats set in propped up on wood blocks. Made sure I was comfortable behind the wheel / pedals and made tabs to mount them in. I’m not really tall (5’9”) so I have some room to play with but I will absolutely be referencing the helmet thread and getting 2x helmets for when I get this thing going because the way it came out I will definitely smack my dome on the cage bopping along the trail. Above the head is about 4”.

Don't forget about spine compression. You will likely not have that problem but my head is close to the roof of mine and I think about ti all the time.

I’d like to think that if I get to wheeling to a point where I get to those thoughts I’ll be moving into a buggy. (Actually I may be looking to buy an actual tube frame and transfer my driveline into it). 4cyl, 5 SPD, dual cases, 40’s, tube chassis. Sprinkle a little propane and propane accessories in there cause Hank Hill.
 
Driver side brackets in tonight. Need to make a bolt buy. My gar-ace-age hard ware is out. Need bolts for floor plate for A,B pillar seat bar sammich plates and the seat mounts. Pretty cool to see seats in this thing though. Oh, and gotta get screws to put the door panels on. I have aluminum diamond plate panels for them from one of the trucks I stripped so mights as well put em to use.

Going Sunday to Oklahoma for a month for school (insert John Winger, “Army training, Sir!”) got one quick project out of the way. Hurculiner seems to be pretty good for what it costs. I have used it several times although never as an actual “bed” liner with good results.

Forgot to post but this past Saturday I got the trans and tcase in. This means I could mount the starter. Borrowed the NeverStart battery from my ‘89 and got this thing to fire up. It’s the first time since I set the motor into the truck. Didn’t run it long cause
a.) I just ran it of the fuel bowl (no gas tank) b.) the cooling system is hooked up
Selling the dual case xmember I have and will be getting a single case xmember from BudBuilt. Going to stick with a single case for a while as this is supposed to be budget and nothing about duals fits that scenario. Don’t figure the ratshit straps will hold up??

Quickie today. Welded tabs and got the belts mounted. Spray bombed the cage (best I could). Need to make some sort of little holders to keep the shoulder belts up by the headrests.

sanded down the passenger side and started making it one color. Not doing any fancy body work just spray bombing it to be a bit more presentable.

Just about sprayed my coffee all over my keyboard with that last line there! :laughing: That particular shade looks damn good on it! Hell, I love that shade on anything, though. :huggy:

Next is crossmember, measure for drive shafts and then tires. These things on it were free (on a parts truck) but the only measure 33” tall (labeled as a 35”) and the dry rot cracks are comparable to the Grand Canyon. I’m thinking something in the 36x12.50 bias TSL flavor.
 
If you ever find your way up to Pennsyltucky, or have them catch a ride....I've got some 38.5x11 Boggers that can be yours for a rather handsome price (free fiddy free), if you want. If you consider them mounted to 6 lug Chebby rallies a bonus, then bonus!

I don't have an actual measure of the tread depth at the moment, but this is the latest pic. I've only used them for mud racing, and they've been garaged for the past decade....if that's any motivation. :laughing:

No problem. I've been stalking your thread for a while, then I saw you mention a need for tires, so thought I'd throw that out there. Since we bought a new house, I honestly don't know the fate of the Jeep...part of a thought for 'keeping it' is smaller tires, since I have no practical need for some bigass Boggers anymore. I've gotten my use out of them. Still trying to come up with a compromise with the wife, she likes our big new EMPTY garage (empty except my work bench, tool boxes, engine hoist, welder, compressor...lol) and keeps saying she doesn't want it to get filled/cluttered with junk. Being another HOA 'hood, we already are dedicating some space to the bikes, scooters, and play house for the girls. She also mentioned she doesn't want me making a mess and getting the girls' stuff "dirty..." :laughing: Ok, plausible concern. I might be able to stack them in the corner for an indeterminate period of time if I ask the boss sweetly enough. Anyway, if you think you might be able to get hands on them, holler. I might be able to hook you up.

Not a lot of pictures (you can reference earlier posts) but the bed is in generally acceptable shape for being put on a wheeler that will get beat up. Not trying to go full resto but I felt this needed addressed. The bottom of the bed bulkhead had rusted away from the bed floor at the front. Pulled the bolts and lifted the bed back off to tackle this issue. Replaced about a 1.25” strip 95% across the bed.
Long term is to spray bomb the rest of the truck green in the @ProbablyBroke shade. Inside the bed I’m gonna power wash and fog it with etch primer. I’ve got a spare gallon of Herculiner that will get dumped in there. Not trying to make it perfect but trying to prevent further decay.
