spun bearing? I think, little play SBC 5.7

napa? so it will say Crocus cloth and it's one set grit rating? (that's what I'm gathering)
I’m not sure where you can get locally to you, I’ve always ordered mine.

I wouldn’t suspect many people under 35 to have even ever heard of crocus cloth.

It is nowhere even similar to Emery cloth other than it’s a strip and comes on a roll

Why is it called crocus cloth?

The grit bonded to actual crocus cloth is iron-oxide (rust) and the color of rust is similar to the color of saffron – which the Romans called crocus; and the Greeks krokos.Apr 23, 2019

Guess maybe that’s what I may have been thinking of. The stuff I remember using was like “2,000 grit”.
so this "crocus cloth" isn't local, I need it here and working since my rod bearings are coming Tuesday morning. So, is 2000 grit paper something I can get locally? if not, what can I go buy that average auto parts store would have

There's this wonderful thing called McMaster Carr 🤷‍♂️ McMaster-Carr can pretty much guarantee it'll be there Tuesday morning.

You are correct, I've never heard of it until today though I'm pretty sure I've used some in the past.

typical thread with solid advice
Typical reply of yeah all that advice, I’m going to do it another way. Tell me my way will work 😂
hey in my defense I asked for a "bandaid" fix from the getgo so don't bash me for not wanting to fix this spun bearing the correct way. I was just asking if there was a "better band aid" way of doing it,...if there is even such a thing and I got my answers!! Now I'm trying to find the right sand paper to use (or the like) that's local to pick up asap...and honestly don't really care if it lasts like 5trips with some thick Rotella and some lucas in it...at this point I have 30min of dropiing the pan if that, another 1hr to replace bearings and put it back together. If it starts knocking again, I'll send it to the moon and make dam sure all them rods come flying out the top like 4th of July and get my moneys worth lol. If she going out, she going out with a bang damit

I mean that's cool but surely somewhere locally has to sell 1500-2000grit paper?!?! that's all that roll is according to the description. Like I'm tryin to go get it tomorrow morning and get this job done like yesterday...

If @Mac5005 says get the crocous then do it and don’t piss around. When I originally commented about Emory cloth I was more than likely mislabeling it cause it’s been over 20 yrs since I used it in my hack ass description previously stated.

I’m suggesting crocus cloth bc it uses iron oxide as the abrasive.

If you use a cloth that uses something else as an abrasive I can’t speak to how well it’s going to polish the surface to the correct finish for use as a bearing surface.

Just bc it has a grit similar to 1500-2000, it’s vastly different from paper or emery cloth that has 1500-2000 grit.

well I'll be darned, learning more and more. So this is the only stuff to get then huh...wouldn't a machine shop have this stuff? or something similar? I bet they would since that's what it's used for

Auto paint store near me has some ridiculous high grit papers and I kind of remember seeing iron oxide when I was there recently.

People are giving you the bandaid cheap fix though.

The answer you want to hear is just sand it down with anything and slap some bearings in it. Just do it. That’s what you want to do anyways.

Heck that's what I'd do in this case too. I'm not even judging him for it.

Yeah…I wouldn’t die on this fuller hill. I’ve done exactly what he’s attempting to do in shit mud trucks and even in the original 460 in my 96. Go in to it knowing it’s borrowed time, and your hack may get 5 miles or 50,000 miles…it’s a gamble. Emory cloth, plastigauge, appropriate bearing and send it.

well new bearings are in.....ran for 15min idling...then revved it up to 3000 for about 3min...so far still sounds very healthy with 5qts of 20w50 and 1qt of some other thick crap LMBO. That's the update, it'll last till it lasts

well I guess trash in the oil it is.
It's not a SBC thing. It's an "any" engine thing. Just like all of the 4.0s you've rebuilt over the years. Just in a V as opposed to straight.
Dirt or debris can get in there for one thing. Poor lubrication too. Among other things.
Crocus cloth is typically 1000 grit.
so guys go easy on me....
I'm wanting to understand what causes this? Like how can cylinder 8 spin a bearing and all the others, especially 7 right next to it on the same crank journal, still be perfectly fine? For that matter, how come usually only one rod spins and the others usually from what I'm reading/gathering will not? Now I'm just wanting to learn what causes this since apparently it's a pretty common issue among these SBC motors. thank you

Hmmmmmmmm
