Tell me about your incredible state.

For a while there, we couldn't go out in our yard from April to October because of the Asian Tiger mosquitoes. I started spraying every-damn-thing with a bug/pest spray hooked to the garden hose. Much better after that.

Asian Tigers are a big deal in any urban/suburban area.

I use mosquito authority.. they come spray our yard every 21 days and we now have no more bugs :) and the kids can now play in backyard..

What's it cost?

That Ortho shit was awesome. I turned on the hose, and it looked like the forest fire scene from Bambi.

I would need to look at receipts but I think it was like $400 for the season..

Only places around here with misquito concentration is stagnent ponds and places like that. Snakes it depends on what part of the state. i would say the western part would have more chance of copperheads and the eastern part more of a chance of seeing cottonmouth. Black snakes are pretty common and a good friend to have if you see one around your area less likely to have mice, and other snakes. We do have black windows and brown lacrouse (not sure how to spell it) but they are not really that much of a problem.

Have you thought about what part of the state you would like to be located at? i know you talked about the beach so Winston Salem/ Greensboro or Raleigh/Durham might be good choices.

I didn't realize widows made it that far east. I assume the dangerous snakes are no more bothersome than in other areas. I have a bit of a phobia with snakes.

Are HOAs prevalent in the area? Around here it's all so new it's difficult to find a home that isn't covered by an association.

Thanks for all the advice everyone, I've been reading a lot of forums and this has been the most helpful. I figured the 4 wheelers would be the down to earth ones.

Most newer stuff probably has an HOA, but it shouldn't be hard to find something that's not. It really depends on what you're looking for, ie, in a neighborhood, on a couple acres, etc. Older stuff closer to town won't have one, and anything out past the "new/recent" developments won't. In the middle, it's hit and miss.

ya, i miss grass. gravel is easy to maintain, but it's certainly not easy on the eyes. Here is a pic of the house I'm selling, hopefully closed by May. I'll be much happier with a grassy yard.

I bet that yard is rough on mower blades!

I'm from Colorado and spent a year 2 different times in Phoenix. I despise the place. Would NEVER go back. Too big, not enough green, WAY too much traffic. Too many people. The ONLY thing good about Phoenix was when I left. That being said, I hated Raleigh too for many of the same reasons. (There is plenty of green though). I now live in Winston Salem and I'd say the 2 hospitals here are probably the biggest employers left in town. The people are much nicer here too. Raleigh is mostly transplants from the north so take that for what it's worth. The wheeling here is much different than out west. Many more trees to hit for starters. And the humidity here sucks ass but it beats 120 in the shade and cooling down to 95 at night. That's going to be biggest thing you'll have to get used to.

I HATE summer here. Especially monsoon season when the lows are in the 90's with some humidity. It sucks opening the door at 5 am to a gust of hot wind that's like dog breath. I would love some cooler summer nights. Around here I'm locking inside from may until september....

Living with the northern transplants isn't a terrible thing for me, since I pretty much am one. The sprawl out here is a bit annoying, but it's not like there is much to travel to. Every 5 miles is another strip mall with the same big box retailers in it, and since everything is so new mom and pop shops never existed....

When we lived in Pa my favorite thing to do was get in the car, head any direction and find nice small towns with interesting stories and interesting shops. We never had a plan, just snap decisions of "left or right" when the road ended. So much of arizona is vacant you can't really do that here, you need a planned destination for the same effect.

The road has been long (and got longer) but I'm still on my way!

My wife has since graduated and landed that all important entry level job locally. So, that pushes our plans to come east back about a year. Unfortunately the hospitals in N.C. she applied to never returned a call, I assume they were more interested in hiring local inexperienced nurses. No one ever talks about how difficult it is for nurses to get "new grad" off their resume!

That said, We are going to be in Raleigh from 12/26 until 1/1. We are arriving on the amtrak, picking up our rental car and flying out of RDU. So, I have a few more questions:

Suggestions on places to stay? Preferably an "extended stay" type place with a kitchen. I still need to reserve a hotel. From online reading my wife is drawn to Cary, I'm more interested in Wake Forest.
Suggestions on things to do and see? I don't mean the tourist stuff either... I'd like to "live" as a local while we are there. restaurants, watering holes, cruises and so on would be appreciated.
I also need to hire a ride from the train station to the airport, anyone on here have a car service or recommendations?

Thanks!

places to go.. Lone Rider Brewery.. www.loneriderbeer.com they have a tasting room and it is near the airport.. GREAT BEER :)

what time you gonna arrive the 26th? I can probably get you a ride from my dad for a lot cheaper then any car service around here.. plus he used to drive for the car services around here and has a mini van so you both can fit..

If you're going to be at the train station in town, might as well hit The Boylan Brew Pub on your way to wherever you're staying... Could you have enterprise pick you up at the train station and get you a car closer to town, or are you definitely renting from out at the airport? It's a 20-25 minute drive, one way, from the Amtrak station to the airport.

There are some extended stay places near Crabtree Valley Mall (Glenwood Avenue and 440) and some near Wake Forest Road and 440, sorry don't know anything about any of them. Either area is easy to get to and then easy to get around from... if you want to live like a local, either area is also good for getting into downtown.

Definitely renting from the airport, My work is contracted with one of the company's that rents only from the airport. Plus i think it will be easier to return since I'm flying back from there. I love that you guys are recommending local brews!
