Tellico Spring Fling Question...

I've looked at Tellico's site and couldn't really find much info.

I'm planning on attending this year and will probably be tempted to at least go on a trail-ride or two. Question is... is it required to have a fire-extinguisher, first aid kit, etc. to ride on any of the trails?

I'm going whether or not my Jeep is ready to wheel the trails, I'll just spectate if I can't safely/legally wheel it.

i was kinda wondering the same thing. I feel pretty comfortable going to URE in a bone stock cruiser, but what about tellico? what equipement would you suggest, i.e. minimum tire size, locker configurations, anything else?

I have not been up there since the trail changes and closures, but from what I know of the trails that are open.....

Schoolbus: Front and rear lockers, Minimum 35" tires and winch

Guardrail and Hellicopter: Front and rear lockers, Minimum 35" tires and winch

Upper 2: Front and rear lockers, Minimum 35" tires and winch

You may get by with less, or even one locker, but it'll mean a lot of winching. The requirements of a Hi-lift jack, spare tire, first aid kit, battery hold down, and fire extinguisher, are part of the tech inspection of SFWDA for events like The Dixie Run. This isn't a SFWDA event, but all of these things are a good idea.

Here is a link to a map made up for an August 09 trail run that is in the planning:

Tellico Map

It has info on suggested vehicle specs etc also. Its not up to date because the FS suggested plans of action haven't been posted yet to the public. So things may be re-opened, stay closed, more closures, etc.

Well that map helped. I just wouldn't want to end up riding the 2wd trail. If I'm gonna go somewhere like Tellico, I at least wanna put myself and my XJ up to a little bit of a challenge.

Well that is because Trail 1 is technically Tipton Creek Road, it is just used as a trail connector to Trails 2, 4, and 5. Trails 4,6, and 8 are a popular "loop" run. While also 5 and 3 are known to be fun also, even though a lot of the challenge has been taken out of parts of 5. As mentioned Upper 2, 11, and 12 are the ones to stay away from in stock rigs. Also Lower 2,7, and 9 fall under that list also because of the Peckerwood Ledge, Slick Rock, and the Rock Garden but they are currently closed (the entire area is under winter closure, but they WERE closed all of last year).

I did trail 1 in my 2wd stock ranger.

My advise - make sure you have your rig fully tested and reliable before you go.

Lockers are a must IMO.

Anyone know if slick rock, lower2, and peckerwood are going to be open?

"Here's the way I see it. They're now saying they'll distribute the new proposals at the beginning of Feb. That gives them a 30 day public comment period. Now, last time we did good with the letters, email, etc. Because of that response they've now taken much longer than expected to release the new draft.

Here's the point. If we flood them with letters (paper copies) that means they'll have to read everyone one of them and scan them in. They'll also have to take into consideration everyday idea and opinion. I think if we have a larger response then last time it'll take them longer than the month of March to decide. That means the 1-yr closure is up and they'll all be open. Then we'll see what our efforts have done.

So to make a long story short, if we have a huge response I think all the trails will be open during the Spring Fling."

I was lookin' at maybe doing Trail 4. Depends on what people consider Mild-Moderate. There's some local spots here that require 4wd when wet, regardless of tires.

With the way Fain's Ford is, and considering you have 31" Mud tires you should be fine on Trail 4. I would think in reality you could probably do Trail 4, Trail 6, and probably Trail 5 (since the hard water crossing has been no more for how long..). Just go on google video or youtube and do a search for Tellico, or Tellico Trial # (insert number). There are a decent amount of videos for you to get an idea of what you will be up against.

I appreciate it. I've watched numerous Tellico vids but never really paid attention to trail names and numbers. Know of Schoolbus, Guardrail and Hellicopter pad to name a few. Those are a tad too extreme for the XJ in it's current state.

I have been to Tellico with 31's, 33'2, 35's, 38's and everytime was fun.. you just have to be smart on what trails you attempt.. and also always good to have someone with you to help if needed

lots of info here on tellico:

trail map:

and
http://www.cnc4x4.org/trails/tellico_map2.gif - this one explains level of each trail well

I would say 1,3,4 and 5 woul dbe good for you.. BUT please have atleast 1 other vehicle with you.

Here is pic of guardrail - I woul dnot suggest this for you

pic of helicopter pad - probably not for you.

but the trails I listed above you wil have fun on.. yes you still need to drive and pay attention.. but still fun

Thanks Bruiser! I don't feel like I'm going to be as lost now.

I've been to Tellico before, but it was on the back of an ATV about 10 years ago.

Hopefully a friend of mine will be going as well. Not going to wheel alone as I know most of your vehicles and driving skills could be put to much better use on more difficult trails/obstacles.
