The list of which 4.0L Jeep motor will fit your Jeep

Thx a lot, i'll be looking for original 2.8 v6 to make it ori 90% but here in Poland theres no way at the moment to get one, even when looking at gmc parts distributors
Any luck at finding a v-6 Camaro? They would have a 3.4 with the same motor mount points and transmission bolt pattern. Just a thought....0

Not so popular in Poland, even when you find -Price will be hilarious. Im also a lit bit surprised ab 2.8 v6 , searching for that for 2 Days now and it looks like it never existed. Nothing in jeep auctions, nothing in blazer auctions. Looks like it needs to be The Golden shot or I need to look for it in US

I'm looking at replacing a blown 2001 Jeep Cherokee Sport motor 4.0 L with a 1999 Jeep Cherokee 4.0 L motor. In the original post it states that you need an ignition coil pack if you're going to use a '99 with an '00 or '01, but that it would be easier to find an '00 or '01 motor. I can find an UF296 ignition coil pack on Ebay for $42. Is that all I need to make the '99 work in my '01? Seems to easy based on what the initial post stated. Anyone have thoughts?

The problem is the 99 motor does not have the mount holes in the head. You original coil pack will work but you cannot bolt it down to the 99 head. There are some who have mad mount adapters for the early motors to take the late coil pack and others have adapted to a coil pack from a viper and other motors that has 6 outputs.

So researching an earlier post someone posted a link to a XJ Viper Coil mod kit. It comes with a mounting bracket, viper coil, wire harness and spark plug wires for $130. Is this literally all i would need in order to make the '99 motor work in my '01? Sorry I'm pretty green at this, but I don't want to buy a motor that I can't end up using or find out once it's half in that I need some $600 item to make it work.

Yes. I’ve never done it though.

Hey guys I’m new here. Just picked up an ‘88 XJ with the 4.0 and I’m looking to swap a ‘97 4.0 into it. What’s needed?
I'd get the complete harness (engine, trans, & interior) plus cluster & computer from 91-95 and change it all over. That being said, you can swap everything from the 88 motor over to the 97 and make it a direct drop in swap. I did this same conversion a free years back and the upgrade to sbec was a great improvement.

Ok guys I have a 2002 tj with a crank knock and I also have a 1995 Cherokee that’s rusted out like gone gone lol, can I use my 02 head on the 95 block and put in the tj

Rehashing an old thread. I have a 98 TJ and found a complete set up from a 95 XJ (not my 96 XJ) will the engine mount bosses match up? Any help appreciated, thanks much.

Not to be a douchenozzle, but all of this is covered on the first page.
To answer your question, swap your old manifold and sensors along with everything else, onto the new to you long block. As stated, the long blocks are identical. Just the exterior items will be different.

Came out of a thread in the general chat. Here's the comprehensive list of what motors will fit which Jeeps.

1987-1990 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L
Renix motor - you can use 87-90 4.0L
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ You will need to relocate temp sender to thermostat housing from HO motor. Also need to use all your Renix accessories, distributor, flywheel/flexplate, etc. 00-01 is not recommended due to crappy head. Some people say the 0331 isn't as bad as people say. We scrap Jeeps, more than likely if we get a 0331 head Jeep in the head is cracked, well over half the high mileage 00-01 ones we get in have this problem.

1991-1999 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

2000-2001 Jeep Cherokee XJ 4.0L
00-01 XJ
You can also use 91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ engines, but you will need to purchase separate coil pack adapter brackets since the 00-01 is a coil pack motor and earlier engines do not have mounting provisions. It would be cheaper and easier to just find the correct 00-01 motor.

93-98 Jeep Grand Cherokee ZJ 4.0L
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

99-04 Jeep Grand Cherokee WJ 4.0L
99-04 WJ, 00-06 TJ - 2002 and up were TUPY heads and did not have the cracking problems that earlier 0331 heads had. 02+ are recommended.

1991-1995 Jeep Wrangler YJ
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

1997-1999 Jeep Wrangler TJ/LJ
87-90 XJ - Renix motor, lower power output, not recommended
91-01 XJ, 93-98 ZJ, 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ (read 87-90 XJ section above about 0331 head issues on 00-01 XJ)

There you have it, please let me know if anything is wrong here. This was all gone off of by memory and experience here in the shop. I think I got it all correct but if anyone finds issue let me know and I'll update it. Also, some motors might have slight wiring differences with the temp gauge wiring because after 96 they stopped putting them in the cylinder head. You can either use a 96+ thermostat housing and extend the wire, or you can drill and tap your existing housing and extend the wires. You can also be brave and drill and tap the head. I'd rather do the housing and extend the wire and not risk it.

There are also some other differences with swapping HO motors into Renix Jeeps and the other way around, most of it is gasket related and easily remedied with using the correct gaskets.

Hope this helps some people!
So for clarification on my situation, I have a 92 4.0l that’s built into a 4.7l stroker and I want to put that engine into an 88 chassis And take the 88 motor and put it into the 92 chassis. The temp sensor stuff still needs to be changed even if it’s a whole long block? Is there anything else that needs To be changed over?

Yes there is a lot different. Intake port height, complete injection system is different. Oil filter adapter is different. For more research renix vs HO 4.0 differences.

The earlier XJ HO 4.0 was a really strong feeling engine, especially in a manual. What was the actual difference from the last ones like in my 04 TJ? The latter ones feel very anemic compared to those I’m referring to.

I have read the heads on the later ones are actually better but the performance doesn’t bear that out.

If it is programming, do any of the piggyback chips make much difference?

You can do that, but you'll need to swap over everything from the Jeeps. Intake and everything, only using the longblock itself and will still need to elongate that sensor wiring.

The 99+ 4.0L were the best performing ones because of the better intake setup. The head was different in the 00+ ones and they also got the coil pack ignition setup. I've never noticed the later ones to be anemic, quite the opposite actually.

I am kinda lost confused on this interchange thing...
I need an engine I found one for $350 that runs good
So my question is will a 98 Grand Cherokee 4.0 engine interchange and work in my 04 Wrangler TJ to replace my 4.0 motor that just went out

Short answer is no. A 97-99 TJ motor would, but not an 04. Any of these will work: 91-01 XJ (Cherokee), 93-98 ZJ (Grand Cherokee) , 91-95 YJ, 97-99 TJ

And props to you for following the link posted in your other thread and trying to figure it out.

Was going to drop oil pan but I can't get the exhaust bolts loose yet so I sprayed them down again with PB Blaster to soak longer while that's soaking I did a compression test

To clarify I can take any 4.0 long block and put my 2004 4.0 exterior parts on it and it will work in my 2004 Jeep Wrangler X TJ??

cylinder 4 was 90lbs first test and 155 and 150bs the other 2 maybe I didn't have it snug enough 1st time

Got a HD inspection camera with color screen I've went in
1.Spark plugs holes-Nothing out of ordinary
2.Oil pan drain plug hole-
Nothing looked broken and no broken pieces in bottom oil pan...

What should I do now??

Could bad gas be the problem ???
I stopped at a station known for bad gas my gas light was on so i had no choice i got $10 gas... later that night my jeep started this Knocking Clunking Rattling Misfire Fall on its face Loss of Power no check engine light and here I am stumped still today trying to figure out what's wrong

Sucks as it may be but I would do everything in my power to get all the gas out of that thing. Throw some berrymans or sea foam in the tank and then top it off with the fanciest premium gas you got and drive it. Would also change fuel filter prior to all of this. YMMV.
