title question

One concern that I would have is that, say, your in a accident in your frankenjeep. And the insurance adjuster comes out to do the claim stuff. He looks at the dash and the vin doesn't match the insured title. Neither does the axle or tranny or motor. Since you "t" boned a happy little family the insurance company decides to hang you out to dry and you get sued for 5 lifetimes worth of wages. I worry about this much more than anything the DMV could do to you or going to jail for a class whatever misdemeanor.

That's not what he said.
As long as you are combining parts that include a legal title, you are not breaking the law. It doesn't matter where the parts physically move to or from.
What is the difference between picking up a tub and putting it on a frame - and putting a frame underneath a tub?
Only your perspective on which one is "first".

I don't think this is what he is saying. I have no problem taking a clean title tub and building off of that. Hell, my DD Jeep is one that we did a body swap on. I think he is literally saying that since that is ok, it is ok to only swap the VIN over to the vehicle and be fine.

Which is completely and totally illegal and you will face a huge ass fine and possibly jail time. VIN swapping is no joke, they don't mess around with that shit.

So for everyone that replaces the tub with a used one or even a new fiberglass one, what's the solution if swapping VINs is not right?

If it is reconstructed I don't see the problem. I just have a problem with driving a Jeep in, only swapping the VIN plate over, and claiming it to be a new Jeep.

I don't see anywhere anybody said that.

that is exactly what i am saying. not once have i mentioned swapping VIN plates over.

As far as used tub with different frame, technically your supposed to send off both titles to the state, telling them what has been done, and they send you a new "combination" title that has both VIN numbers on it to prove you are legal.

OR, the license and theft inspector has to come out and do some sort of vin work. I know they will come remove a vin tag when a cab or such is sold (had it happen when I worked in a salvage yard) but I think that was mostly due to how mew the truck was.

My mistake then, it just seemed like there is a lot of smoke and mirrors here with things. Talking about registering a different vehicle and running plates on it and doing a process in reverse and whatever. If you just straight up said "buy a vehicle with a good title and swap all the good parts over to it and register that" then that is fine. It just seemed like you were saying you were swapping vin plates without actually saying you were swapping vin plates, to me at least. If I am wrong, I am sorry, my mistake.

But you did say this:
I have a rebuilt vehicle but no title... I go and buy broken down or part out vehicle (with title) of the same model (year and color can be different, just same model. Cant use a TJ title for a YJ). Then simply take that title to the DMV, transfer it(this is the time to update the color if it changed), register, stick the plate on your rebuilt vehicle.

Which is completely and totally illegal. When I was in high school I had a friend who had two green Fox body Mustangs. One of them was a 4cyl 5-spd and one was a built V8 5-spd. The 4cyl was his daily and whenever he wanted to drive the V8 he would swap the plates. He even got pulled over a couple of times and the police just saw the plate matched a green Mustang and never thought anything different. Then he wrecked it, they looked at the vin and noticed the plate didn't match. Now all of a sudden he was charged with all kinds of shit, and his insurance company wouldn't cover the accident because his car was being driven without insurance.

Again, if this is not what you are trying to say I am sorry, but this is EXACTLY how you worded it. Whether or not you are intending to, you are telling people on here to do something that could get them in a shitload of trouble.

What about the guy in the van at the autofair trying to sell me a "historical document"? Go or no go?
That depends whether that historical document comes with a piece of hardware, what ckruzer would maybe call a "fractional vehicle" ;-)

Illegal to buy or sell a vehicle in NC without a title. So how are you getting an untitled vehicle without committing a crime?

Can you sell a frame without a title?
What about a body without a title?
What if you sell em separately and then bolt them back together?

I bought a 62 C20 in SC, no title. Sent off a previous owner address request to the DMV to see if I could find the last registered owner and got a letter stating they don't keep records past 2004. Since DMV apparently doesn't know who owned this vehicle last, can I just apply for a lost title?

Searched SC DMV and didn't see anything about a bonded title, so I just gave them a call this morning. The lady was really helpful. Said anything over 25 years with no title, just fill out a TI-021A form and mail it in with pictures of the vehicle from all sides. Also have to get an DMV inspector or LEO to come out and inspect it. It runs (barely) and stops, but it's not road worthy yet so I guess it will get branded "not for road use" until I get it up and running good and inspected again.

that is typically how it works here.... they inspect it for VIN plates for legality and then again for road worthiness when the time comes.
