To those of you that drink beer at Uwharrie...

Come sit with me one saturday and you'll see what is going on and who's to blame! I gotta be careful, I'm living in the biggest glass house of all.

I may take you up on that someday. I would like a chance to reason with as many of these people as possible, in a non-threatening manner. But realistically, I may only make one more day trip out there this year.....

and i was agreeing and complying with you and what you said. i simply added that i dont drink and wheel, nor do i drink then wheel. all i was saying was i did it in my own privacy back at my camp after wheeling. people get defensive and wanna blow it outta preportion. like i saidi dont throw mine out and will gladly pick up others and even enfoce "drinking and wheeling" vialotors(sp).

No sweat, I just wanted to clarify what my vision was..... :)

my .2; as an avid wheeler i enjoy riding and a cold adult beverage every now and then, i however ride the trails during the day and when i get back to the tent consume said beverages. i always carry trash bags and never drink and wheel. i would hate to see URE shut down bc of people that use and abuse their privelages(sp) and would hate to see some ruin it for others. im up for the whole must be 21 to wheel thing. most that are 21 and up have enough sense to know.... just my thoughts

thats only going to hurt the responsible young wheelers out there. My whole group I wheel with are sick an tired of picking up on our trails all though not URE but no one ever cared we wheeled the trails just drunks and dumpers trashing the trails. Its not a age thing there ignorant 60yr olds an ignorant 16yr olds but yes check points cooler searches surreee. age descrimination.....why

Here you say your compleatly against drinking on the trail.
im not saying im not opposed to checkpoints etc... either. im a responsible 28yr old with 3 kids and if they started enforcing "no drinking" then i would not drink @ all @ URE . i honestly think theres a few that ruin it for everyone and as long as you act like you have sense and dont hurt yourselves or others whats the big deal?! id rather run into someone drinking and driving on the trail than going northbound on southbound 85.
Here it sounds as if you condone drinking on the trail "as long as it is done responsibly"
im saying we can go all day back and forth about it, but there are idiots out there and bottom line i dont want to see anyone hurt or ure closed. i havnt been to ure in 2yrs so i know its not me dropping cans. and if i ride trails and have a beverage on private property, im responsible enough to not hurt neone.... if we started a petition to enforce "no drinking" and actually enforce it, i would sign it hands down.
Here again you seem to condone drinking and wheeling while simultaneously being against it.
Your posts seem conflicting which led me to my original post. If you, or anyone, condone in any way drinking and wheeling/driving, on public or private land, then you set the example for others to follow especially if you are well respected within your group. While you "may" be able to be responsible with adult beverages, they may not and may lead to avoidable accidents or incidents.
Look, we all know that it's illegal to have any alcohol anywhere in Uwharrie. That is not the point of my post. There is no debate to be had. It's illegal, period.
My point is that we also all know that some people are going to do it anyway. The more you scold them the less that they will listen. They will just get defensive and shut you off. My effort was to try to reason with them, hoping that they will understand they are hurting themselves as much or more than anyone else by polluting the trails with can's.
If you believe that there aren't people on this forum that drink beer on the trails in URE, you may be giving people too much credit. If I can reach even one or two and they can spread the word it will be worth the effort.
This thread was written To The Beer Drinkers not about them.
If your worried about getting caught with a bunch of empties, just put a trash bag on your rig and you'll look like everyone else that is picking up your cans. If everyone packed out their beer cans 95% of the trash problems would be taken care of and the forest service will be less likely to take action regarding the matter. As it stands, I believe that all the cans are sending a message that there is a lot of $$ to be made ticketing violators. Stop alerting them to what your doing and help keep our trails clean at the same time. It's in everyone's best interest and only makes good sense.
I completely agree with the purpose if your thread. My intent was not to attack those who think they can drink on the trail but to inform them that I and others will turn them in if it is seen on the trail. If those same people stop carrying it on the trails then there will likely be less waste on the trails. With trail closures looming all over the country we need to step up and begin to police ourselves and to always put the best image of our sport first.

im up for the whole must be 21 to wheel thing.

I am totally against people littering out trails with beer cans etc. However, I am not in favor of this. For the sole reason that I am below the age of 21, and I enjoy wheeling. So why should we ( the ones below 21) be punished? Is the littering from teens? Check points and cooler checks is always a good idea!

damn, three pages and nobody has slipped in the "we don't need to be discussing this here on the web because the opposition might see it and use it against us" post. seems like that allways pops up when a thread is started about stupid crap seen or done on the trail system.

I am glad to see this thread rolling.

well, I'll take that comment a step further and possibly make a few folks mad. What I see most is the 4-wheeler crowd. I don't know about you but my rig costs more than $5k. It may not be worth much more than that but I've definitely put a lot of money into it. Every dumbass within 100 miles can own a 4-wheeler with only $25/month payments. I've never owned one but every hillbilly I know has one and it's cheaper on gas, easier to tow (back of truck) and is a lot of fun. Those are your drinkers and tossers. Not that we don't have a few but that's what I see.

I think this statement is nothing but wrong! Lets do this logically, Most 4-wheelers carries one person and little to no space for beer? I can say I have been on the trails on everything from a dirtbike to either of my suburbans. Most of the alcohol I see on the trail is in a cooler with several folks in the vehicle.

The trash (not only beer cans) comes from all types of people and vehicles.

Just my opinions though.

how do we know it's not the greenies putting them there to make us look bad

Is that why they do all the fund raisers, to pay for the beer to toss the cans all over our trails? I would think motor oil would be more effective LOL.

First off, no one is going to shut down any trail system for "empty beer cans". Anyone who thinks that is being rediculous.

Second, fewer people drink more beer than me. But, I dont drink on the trail, and tell everyone who I bring up there, that they are taking a chance at paying $150 per beer fine. I cant confirm that fine, I just heard rumors of it.

Third, I dont see the issue with checking coolers...but then again, I never have beer. We used to get checked all the time at Tellico.

Fourth, I am not sure the last time I even saw a Ranger up there.....URE cross May 2008?????

Bottom line, pick up what you see, and make sure your group packs their trash out. Thats really all you can do.

Rob

ive gone even further to say that I HAVNT BEEN TO URE IN 2 YRS AND HONESTLY DONT CARE TO WHEEL WITH PEOPLE WITH THE ATTITUDE THAT IM LESSER A PERSON BC I DRINK.... NUF SAID I PAID MY 5.50 ADD .2

but did you throw your cans on the trail? .....
:flipoff2:

NEVER HAVE AND NEVER WILL! READ MY FIRST POST, I TRASH BAG IT AND PICK UP :poop: ALONG THE WAY.

Alright, I'll play....

Where did I ever say not to drink?
Where did I ever say not to drink at URE?
Where did I ever say not to get stinkin drunk?

English.... do you speak it?

Are you literate enough to reread my posts and come up with a comprehensive understanding of the point I'm trying to get across?
Are you literate enough to type out an answer using capitol letters where they belong and proper punctuation?

I'm guessing not, or you wouldn't have been offended in the first place.

Not sure I understand....no one is saying not to drink, they are saying not to drink AND drive...what am I missing?

Aaron beat me to it...sorry.

Your not missing anything in my book.

edit: Actually, I never even said "don't drink and drive" I said that the guys doing it aren't going to stop, and I'm just pleading with them to pack out their empties.

(hey, jweezyferg.... you can use that ^^ as a hint to answer the question I asked you. )

I don't drink and I have no problem with people who do. That being said if you drink while your wheeling your a freaking douche bag its the same as drinking and driving to me. If you drink at your camp site thats GREAT thats where it is suppose to be done at if it is legal. When you drink at your camp site show some respect for the other people camping that do not drink, do not get all dumb about it. If you cant handle your drink of choice then don't do it

Others have said it and I tend to agree... until the presence of LEOs writing tickets w/ accompanying fines is the "NORM", there's ZERO incentive for those trashing the trails to stop. Once they equate drinking/littering with a "severe pain in the wallet", it *WILL* go away...

AFAICT, outside of occasional visits to the shooting range, parking areas, or the few trails crossing State roads you have a better chance of seeing the Pope on the trails than a Ranger... and those not following the rules know it.

You'd think with all the budget cuts, the FS would have already thought of this? Seems to be an INSTANT revenue stream that could fund both trail maintenance *AND* additional staff?

 :D

1. "AFAICT".. What? You always get me with those Dave....lol
2. I see a ranger almost every time I go there.
3. Would that money go directly to the Forest Service? Or would it go to the state and the F.S. would have to fight to get it back?

yup... like i said back n forth back n forth......

you won conversation ended. i wont b coming to ure or newhere near raliegh so no worries

I think this statement is nothing but wrong! Lets do this logically, Most 4-wheelers carries one person and little to no space for beer?

Whaaaa? Most 4-wheelers have a rack on the back or the front and that's where the cooler goes. I've seen it a thousand times. I guess since you put it as a question you're not really sure. Go to Windrock some time and look around. Then tell me there's no room. Also, My jeep only holds 2 people. 4-wheelers can hold... 2 people. Most buggies hold.... 2 people. 4-wheelers travel in large packs as do some Jeeps, Toyotas, etc. Your logic is flawed.

nice. take your ball and go home when someone doesn't agree with you :shaking:
