Towing Truck

So been saving awhile. And plan to save a little more. Willing to spend 16-20k when ready. Leather interior and auto will be a requirement.

I would like the truck to be economical for camping trips, runs to lowes, picking axles or tires or wood or hay, etc. I don't want to sell an organ at each fill up. I'd also like 4 door to support guests on trips. I would like to be able to tow a 1 ton Jeep and if possible too two 2 jeeps would be awesome!

I like the appeal of diesel over gas for particular reasons. I don't want something that will have repair downtime once or twice a year but do enjoy fixing things. Parts that cost more than a LS motor sour the stomach though.

I'm also a big fan of mechanical ease of repair and also a good aftermarket saturation meaning cheaper parts.

Up to nOw I have been saving for a f250 6.0 lariat or king ranch. Figured I would ask the collective here for input. I lack towing knowledge and perhaps my goals are unrealistic and should just settle for a early 2k Silverado gaser which means I could just get it now and put the rest of the savings to better use that will make money

Thanks!

Where we live you'll regret not getting a diesel down the road. Find a truck with decent miles that has maintenance records and has been bullet proofed. And roll on. I honestly would consider a high mileage 7.3 as well. They can be had for under 10 and if the body isnt rusty will last a long time with proper maintenance.

Just know proper maintenance on a 7.3 adds up rather fast.

I'm a big Ford guy but that's just me. With that said I'd look for one of these 3 F250/F350; 08-11 V10, L99-03 7.3, or 05-07 6.0 I'm personally thinking of going the V10 route down the road as the interiors on the 08+ trucks are just so damn nice.

What about towing aspects? What can a 250 do over a 350? Are all 350s duallys?

I like the saturation the 6.0. Haven't seen anything on v10s. Thanks I will have to look that up.

How much oil do they take? If it's a lot then could just buy by the drum.

I also have access to drums of Wesson for next to nothing. Is it possible to biodiesel the 6.0s reliably?

Only difference in 250 , 350 is springs and rated weight drive train is the same... Well 250 have Dana 50s and 350 have Dana 60s In the 7.3s think that's about the only difference

15 quarts give or take

Depends on the years but there's not many differences between the F250/350 single rear wheel trucks. The 350 will/should have an overload and may sit a little lower I think. Not all F350s are duallys, the last time I checked the market is saturated with SRW F350s.

My 250 doesn't and it's at least a couple inches higher in the back and overall than the 350s I've seen.

What could I realistically tow with either? I see where some advocate technicalities which make it seem it's barely enough for a wagon load of wood

That's weird i have a 01 250 and it has overload springs and my dad's 99 350 sits about 1.5 higher than mine all the way around

@BUCKEYE PERFORMANCE INC. has his nice Cummins dodge for sale.
You wouldn't even have to save up to bullet proof it. Lol
Must be referring to this one for 15k

Idk whatever you want I've towed a 36 ft gooseneck from Ohio loaded with two antique cabins never ran across scales but it's more than two jeeps weigh i promise you that. Dads is manual So i dropped a gear and never let out going up mountains

Was that the f250 or 350? And wow! I guess gooseneck changes the game regarding tongue weight?

Depends on the year, a 7.3 srw truck is only rated around a 20k gross weight. The later years which is essentially the same chassis are rated in the 25k gross range. Which basically means 12-17k trailer weight limit. Now these are just ratings and most people grossly ignore them.

350 but if i had a goose hitch in my 250 would have took it. You should have no problem pulling anything your wanting to with a diesel but trailers should have brakes or you'll really wish you had them

Goose or 5th wheel allows for more pin weight because your loaded directly over the rear axle. Duallys allow when more just because they have an extra set of tires.

Ive had good luck out of the 7.3's and like em but when my current one is ready to be replaced it will probably be a Dodge Mega cab diesel that takes its place.Provided I can find one that has a good bed on it.

My f250 doesn't have enuf susp for my taste in some towing situations.
I had a SW f350 before and the susp was better but load placement on the trailer was more critical since it was just SW.
Current F350 is crewcab and dw so not as much tail waggin the dog as a sw truck.

I know some use waste oil and like it but I never really saw the savings in usin it.By the time you buy/make the stuff to filter/process the oil and the additives, and count your time driving around to every greasy spoon diner in town it just doesn't add up,esp at current prices.

No not waste. Wesson. Let's say you could have an unlimited supply on your door step for $1 a gallon

I still wouldn't run it.
