Has anyone heard anything about this annual ride? I know turtle has put this together the last several years but I have not seen anything about it.

I talked to him about a week ago regarding this. The new management is not cooperating. I didn't get any real details. I don't know what needs to be done, but we have to do something. I think the community there now depends on our donations and I would hate to see it stopped like this. Maybe someone with good negotiation skills like JC could call her and try to work something out?

Try to think of benefits for her to do it.

1. Tax write off for the park as they are donating access. They could count the number of people riding. Multiply that by $15 and then when the toys are donated that would be the value of the toys?

2. Let people who normally don't go there veiw the park like an open house.

3. Let people who have not been back since the price went up see how the place has changed.

With fee's of $20 to camp, and $15 per sperson. Would everyone be willing to pay that amount, AND bring a toy?

I was wondering about this too since I have attended it in the past a couple of times. I sent a pm to Turtle Mechanic a several weeks ago asking him if it was going to happen, but never got a response. He hasn't logged in on NC4x4 in a long time though.

As I have heard this through the grapevine take it with a grain of salt...

What the new management wants Doug to agree to is not within reason and I don't blame him one bit for backing away. This event will probably need to be moved to another venue if it is to continue.

Sadly, the new management still seems to hold true to my first impression and does not appear to respect their patrons or the community they are in.

Yes, but since it is second hand, albeit very reliable, I don't want to possibly say something Doug might not want me to relay publicly.

i doubt it a family of four $80 for a day not including gas at $3.60 a gallon to tow down there one day would cost about $150 i always loved to bring a couple extra toys just help out i just dont see it being possible for alot of people to fork out that kind of money no matter how great the cause is

Yep, this weekend from Raleigh it cost me $175 in fuel for the tow rig there and back. If you include Jeep/Rig fuel riding costs, camping, food/drinks etc it starts getting pretty pricey.

No matter what I would like to see the toy run stay alive, I will probably still go at full price at least for a day trip because i love to wheel there and to supprot the cause. If the need arises for it too be held somewhere else, I can see that easily happening.

Also, how about half price on ride and camp , or a partial of the two

I've been to the last three toy runs.
And i wish to support Doug and his tireless effort to support this cause.
Hope it works out.
Later, Paul...

OK guys i have been talking to doug about this lately. Being in the isuzu crowd we are always there to help serve you dinner and just have a good time and unfortunatly all that has been said here is true. There has been stipulations for doug to do to have the toy run that are just unfair and i dont blame him for backing away. The owner is being totally unreasonable with these and for that i am sorry because it will only hurt her business. I think we need to go to the local media with this that would turn things around quickly.
Doug feels really bad right now about all this and just can't believe this is happening. I know from talking to him he said that the run is not happening as of now but that he wasnt going to let the kids down and will take a loan out to buy all the toys himself. So if anyone still wants to donate toys to help doug out he would really appreciate that but says hes sorry that he can't offer you all anything to say thanks.
I say we all need to show our support of doug and lisa and not go to Callenette to show her just how much business she loses.

I'll catch hell for this but...
From the managements lips to your keyboard. I saw this coming after Doug and I met with them last year and was beat down like a red headed step child for speaking out about it. It was said directly to me when Doug and I met with them last year when they took over that they wouldn't change their business model unless people quit coming. It is so regrettable that the place is now run by people who still, after all this time, don't respect their clientele.

Doug, give me an address where I can send you some toys and a few will be on the way. By God we'll make it a virtual toy run if we have to, every child deserves a decent Christmas.

I was thinking the same thing. Post up an address and I'll send a couple too.
At the same time we need an address (e-mail or snail) to the "business office" of Callalantee so we can express our feelings to them.

Well said and i agree.

I agree we definately need to do the toy collection. I will be willing to donate to the cause. How about a picnic or meeting at a park near there? I'm not sure there is a public park in mountain city, so how about elizabethton? There's a mild trail in Elizabethton called Stoney Creek that we could take people on.

I too will mail a toy or send money to Doug. He or someone who works with him on this could setup a paypal acount for folks to donate. It would be great if we could have the Toy run at an alternate location though.

A thought...

From Walmart.com there are over 4000 toys under $20, almost 6000 under $30 and most can be shipped free to store. We could buy them and have them shipped to the nearest Walmart to Doug and he can pick them up there.

No knowing any of the past details of how this thing was put together, I have been reluctant to say anything, and if what I say now is way off base I offer my apology in advance.

My understanding is that the past Toy Runs benefited the children of the Mountain City area. First off, I want say that I am proud to be associated with the OHV community that made that happen, and I'm happy the kids benefited from it.

Now that it seems the greed (no apologies here) of the new Callalantee management chooses to hinder this effort, and the idea has been mentioned of holding it at The Flats or the Farm. I would think it great idea to pick one of those two places, assuming the BDB or Rock Corps is OK with it, and channel the donations toward either Lincolnton or Marion, pending upon the decided location. If this is already the general idea, excuse me for being a day late & a dollar short again.
