Tractor Thoughts

Now, put a loader on that old ford and see how it compares to the 2501. Probably not nearly as efficient as the newer Kubota. Not that it’s not capable nor able, it’s just not as efficient
Agreed... the loader alone puts the steering in the "Popeye" zone and when "loaded" (slightly more capacity than the average plastic wheelbarrow) is nothing but a timebomb
I’d never use my 2n with a loader, but it does a hell of a job with the box blade and the PTO chipper at a hell of a price
Yeap, 100% designed & built to *PULL* ground engaging implements or power moderate PTO devices

Went by the local to me Kobata dealership yesterday. He has more tractors out front than I have seen in 2 years. When questioned about a mini x vs tractor with hoe. He said he had one for a while but sold it for what he paid for it. KX-40 IIRC and $60K. Of course for no more then I have land wise I'd be better off with a hoe and tractor. Go figure there. But he can't even get any hoes for any of the tractors he has on the yard. The 2501 are 0% 72 months I think he said and about $24,500 and the hoe is another $10K So for me I'll keep educating myself and trying to save some money and work the old Ford 8n bastard I have.

Update. I ran my friends L2501 a couple hours Monday and Tuesday. Got a lot done, but I need MOAR POWAH!
I stopped by the local Kubota dealer to me up here in Lynchburg, VA today. They are trying to move the 2501 as the new 2502 model is on the way in. Price was like $23,500 with the fancy tires, loader, rear tires loaded, etc. I don't know what the original retail price was. That was a gear drive I think. 0% financing also. The 3302 was a touch over $30k. That's a lot of money for 8hp!

From an 01 to an 02 is a worth some money too though.

Waiting to hear back on a L3902 with a couple different options. Got a quote on a JD 3038 today which actually wasn't as bad as I was expecting.

If anyone wants a quote on a JD, my BIL works at James River in Salisbury. PM me and I will send you his contact info.

That’s not a bad price for a 2501 with FEL and loaded tires. I’d be sure to really compare gear vs HST. I have a gear 2n and previously, a gear Mitsubishi tractor; most of my work is loader work, so the HST is far more efficient than the gear, so while the gear may be a reasonable price, a HST may be better suited depending on what a majority of your uses are. Same with the 3302. That’s a lot of $ for 8 extra PTO HP. The loader is identical between the two (aside from the newer model la526).

And, the quick connect bucket on the FEL is extremely convenient and well worth the few extra $. Does that price on the 2501 include the quick connect? And, it’s very easy to find compatible attachments since the quick connect is the same as a skid steer.

What tires? R4? R14? I think R1 are standard. I love my R14 tires. Not sure I’d be happy with the R4 as I see sand and mud often but also grass. They seem to work really well for eastern NC.

Ok when did tractors get the dreadful EPA crap? Looks like from my research anything 25 HP or less does not need it. From what I have read anything above that has a DPF or a DOC.

Looks like around 2011 with a few years for manufactures to adopt depending on credits.

Thats why I changed from looking at a 3302. If I'm going to go emissions, I'm going to get more than a 8HP increase over the non emissions 2502.

Personally, I don't see cats as a big deal. They were on diesel trucks and cars for many years before the "real" emissions equipment came in to play and started causing issues. EGR sucks but is easy to circumvent. DPF is the bigger deal, but after owning several vehicles with DPF in place, you begin to appreciate the lack of diesel fumes, and I imagine that would be even more so after a day of running a tractor.

^wow…Sounds like something a FED would say.

I agree. I'm not too worried about going with the 39hp with dpf.

The big thing for me is the cost increase from sub 26hp to anything above. I wonder how much of that cost is purely emissions equipment when the rest of the tractor is the same.

Someone’s been sniffing the urea a little too much…. 🤣

I don't agree. Of course my experience is with big trucks. I've seen the bill to replace a DOC system. $10K Cleaning the DPF was $3K and didn't work. So back in to replace at another $4K. Now yes I know it's a much bigger diesel and bigger parts but my damn Jetta DPF was $600 IIRC. You know Kubota and JD and all them know they are going to be selling them and will jack up the price.

Right. And most small tractor warranties are 2 years, so they have much less of a warranty liability as compared to cars and trucks. I would assume that it also means less quality since the components have to only last 2 years for the tractor manufacturer to be at risk of replacement and those costs.

No urea on a diesel with just cats ;)

Sounds like you replaced the whole system because the DPF was clogged up. That's not the catalytic converter. 2 different devices (that are nowadays made into 1 expensive piece).

I'm all about hating on EGR and DPF's and DEF/Urea and secondary injectors that dilute oil with fuel, etc...
Maybe most of yall don't realize that lots of your "legendary" and "venerable" 7.3 Powerstrokes and 12 valve Cummings had cats from the factory that never gave any issues for most people?

I do kinda wish GM would have put the 9th injector on LML trucks AFTER the catalytic converters. When the injectors go bad, it's basically dribbling liquid fuel through the cat, which makes them fail...

Other than that, those particular setups work fairly decent.

I do absolutely HATE the smell of exhaust from an emmisions equipped piece od equipment or truck. It's horrible to me and turns my stomach.

I guess I could post this here, the tow rig and trailer thread, or the best year of 3/4 ton suburban thread.

Picked up my L3902 this morning. 4 in 1 bucket and rc1872 cutter. Too hot to use it

@LBarr2002 Hows that tractor working out for you? In my research I've come across Kioti. This is a new one to me. Anyone have any thoughts or experience on them? I've done some more research and even called on a Kobota mini x. Lets just say the sticker shock was real for what the payment per month would be. So I'm back to dreaming and saving.

I've only run it a couple hours prepping for food plots, but good so far.

Kioti, LS, KYM, etc. come out of South Korea. I wouldn't have much issue buying the name brands, and was seriously considering an LS until I found out the local dealer dropped them. They were having issues getting parts and support from the manufacturer.

Bobcat, Bad Boy, and some others have short term contracts with South Korean manufacturers as well, so once the contract is up they may not be renewed. Parts availability could be an issue or you could probably get the same part under a different name (and the wrong color).

For me it came down to dealer support. JD and Kubota are the only established dealers near me.

Good to know. My cousin that owns and runs a construction company on that side of the state said the same about dealer support. For him with heavy equipment it was Komatsu.
