Uber isnt legal in NC. the potential risk is a $500 fine, confiscation of your car and walking home with a misdemeanor. only a few drivers have actually been charged (at the raleigh airport). although, i believe there was some legislation passed recently that may have either lessened the penalty or legalized it in some form or fashion. i'll have to dig that up.
One cannot legally flag down an Uber cab in NC. That's hitchiking, you must you use the app. so that you have a reservation.
Uber circumvents the local caps on what can be charged in a traditional taxi. On high volume you nights you may see an increase of anywhere between 20%-200%. there are nightmare stories of $400 cab rides.
Uber drivers arent versed in local taxi laws, such as where one may or may not take on or recieve passengers. Your driver could be dumping you out into a dangerous traffic area....or not pulling out of traffic creating a road block. (also, putting the driver at risk of fines and citations)
I own a free taxi service. uber doesnt take anything away from my business. That being said, i dont like uber. the leadership has a total disregard for anyone outside of the board room, riders or drivers.
