Ranger Rodney Smith's group accomplished it's assigned tasks and more. Bryan & Caleb from Zuwharrie, David from Triad Jeep Club and Scott and JC from CTB joined Rodney, Pete and Melissa of the FS for the workday.
We hauled guardrail from the double parking lot in to the first culvert on Rocky Mount, right before the Slab Pile intersection and repaired some previously installed guardrail there using hand tools. We then hauled the 25 logs from the bridge that the culvert replaced to the double parking lot.
While we did this the FS personnel erected some stop signs and trail signage.
After we met back up at the culvert our RIC (ranger in charge) decided that we would split into two groups. Bryan, Caleb, David, Scott and Melissa stayed at the culvert to erect several sections of guardrail using a two man auger.
Rodney, Pete and I went up to Slab Pile to take care of a few dead trees that had been flagged as dangerous. Due to Rodney's skill with the chain saw our group was able to cut 12 trees instead of the 5 that had been flagged.
When we got back to the culvert Melissa's group had finished the guardrail installation and drug the remaining logs to the double parking lot. With Bryan, Caleb and David dragging logs we threw all the equipment in the bed of my Ram along with Pete, Scott climbed in the back seat and Rodney and Melissa piled into the front seat and we met up with the rest of our group at the double parking lot.
Our RIC and his assistant made all decisions and we followed their direction. We didn't get everything on the master list done but we did accomplish more than we set out to do at the start of our workday.
The FS was happy with what we did, we had fun and felt like we were of service to them in both of our efforts to keep the OHV trails maintained and open for all users.
