Vandals at URE

Wasnt meant to be a cool statement...meant to make a point and hopefully get it cleaned up

All it did was make you look like an ass. Sorry, but them's the facts. What? Did you think we were all going to sit on our thumbs and hope nobody emailed the Supreme High Commander Ian from Extreme about this? First, Ian could give a rat's ass about this. He's got bigger things to worry about. Second, he has little to nothing to do with the Zuwharrie board. Again, better things to do. Third, people quickly got to work trying to figure out who did what, and more importantly, what can be done to fix it, as soon as this got out. Fourth, not everybody who wheels a Suzuki is associated with the Zuwharrie event or board. This could have been one of those.

An isolated incident doesn't make a group of folks with common interests look as bad as a broad generalization like that does. People read your original statement and think "Hmm...what else have they done to make themselves look bad?" I don't know what we've done to piss you off, though. I hope it wasn't something I did. This has given us a black eye, as if the wheeling community needed another. We're running out of eyes. However, the Suzuki community is fairly close-knit, and we do our best to handle things quickly and appropriately when problems arise. Damage control from this hopefully won't be too bad, though.

Enough flexing, what can we do to fix this? Do I need to skip the DPG event? This was going to be my first. If I pull up in a Sammi, am I going to be welcome?

Probably some greenie trying to make everyone look bad, and Zuk owners are easy targets, since there are so many of them it's hard to prove they didn't do it.

By the way, all greenies need to DB&D as far as I'm concerned.

I don't see why you can't do both. Exactly what and how much work is involved? I was looking for someone to ride a few trails Saturday morning at URE before heading up to DPG. No reason we couldn't incorporate some clean up on the trees, if it's possible to fix them, at the same time.

Is it possible to just take a little sand paper and take the writing off? As far as making the suzuki people look bad, it is the 4x4 community that looks bad. I started this thread and never meant to point fingers. I would have been no more surprised had Jeep or Ford been written all over the trees. I wish I could join in on the clean up this weekend, but I have my daughter and a birthday party Sat.

I am disinclined to lock down this thread for now, the ZUK guys are jumping in here to fix something that they didn't do and that is pretty telling to me!!

The reason I am leaving it open at the moment, because of the positive nature of the thread and the response AND no pictures, etc!! (We had another thread / spray paint issue a while back we removed to keep everything under control)

ZUK guys just happened to be the ones getting zinged this time, but there certainly is alot MORE JEEP owners out there, almost surprising it wasn't that...THIS time.

If someone would rather me lock it or even MOVE the entire thread out of the public area, I am fine with that as well, just send me a PM!

Sam

Has anyone got in contact with the rangers to see what we can do? We need to partner with them to ensure this goes to positive thing for us all involved?

vandals

It is easy to blame someone for a problem, but very hard to fix the problem.Seems this is the 2nd thread i've seen this year on vandals. We have to fight now to keep our ohv areas open from groups and others coming down on them but vandals to?

No worries. I'll be in a Samurai, and might be up for some URE clean up after the DPG event if that is what folks are going to do.

Scraping bark off a tree to 'cover up' or 'remove' a carving or paint is probably more detrimental than just leaving them alone and letting nature take care of itself.

I agree - the brown paint-over sounds like the best route...

Pine trees, you can just take a sharp knife and shave off one "layer" of the bark...won't hurt a thing, peels off naturally anyway. Other trees will be different, and that's probably not the best route...paint over may be better on some.

I've got a cordless grinder. Wonder if that and a coarse flapper disc would be the way to go?
That sounds good to me. Anybody ever done this before?

Just wondering if Mark being MIA from the crowd all day (Friday) was just a rouse to follow behind us & spray bomb the forest? Kinda convenient his Zuk was DOA... what better way to avert suspicion than show up in a Saturn? :flipoff2:

Just dont let anybody see you with a can of spraypaint (regardless of color). It could be percieved as more vandalism.

I know this is a mostly retarded suggestion to the issue, but I'd use a wire wheel on the bark and possibly use some of that green paint stuff the tree trimmers use when they cut off branches. Seems like that might be the best for the trees. As for the bashing of the offenders, I'll leave that alone. This is something that is better off just being fixed without starting a war. I'm sure that those that did it know they were wrong.

Ya' got me. I took the ShitWagon2 up Slab Pile and RML with a trunk full of Krylon. :flipoff2: Seriously, though, when Ken got there, we parked in the lot below the mudhole to unload his junk, and never saw a thing. We were hustling to catch up, but still. If I had, I believe I would have tried to gently remove it right then and there. I hate that this is what it's become, but I'm afraid we're going to see a lot more of this in the future. In spite of our best efforts to maintain a good name for the 'wheeling community, there's a rapidly growing contingent of people who just don't give a crap about the rules. Just like the economy, it's going to get worse before it gets better, I'm sure.

I am still wating to her from the forest service on how they want us to fix it . It looks like it will be paint. They will know when we are there so if any one reports us it will be ok and also I will be more than happy to exlplain to any 4 wheeler what we are doing to help keep open an OHV area. I glad the season is almost over so the trees will have chance to grow new bark before next year.

Bark is a dead layer consisting of only phylllum cells.
It is protective and not supportive.

IOW, Cutting or grinding it will only expose the tree to easier predation from entomological villains. painting over or covering up with a water based paint would be the best choice.

You don't want to be seen with this guy.
