I've always kind of liked them as well. I love the rod look that people do to them.

An old friend of mine (old as in age) was one of the original employees of the SoCal Speed shop and he used to be into VW stuff. He's got this really old picture of a VW Bus he built with a 2880 in it, he's pulling the front tires like 3' off the ground.

Then he showed me a picture of when he put the same 2880 into a BMW motorcycle.

You can make those things wicked fast.

The rear suspension design is what causes the camber . The cars are on torsion bar rear . here is a bagged pic

You're half right. And it's funny that you describe the problem, but include a picture of a late-model pan! ;) The problem is most obvious on Beetles with a swing-axle trans. This would be pre-68. The axles were a solid piece, and the only pivot point was where they entered the transaxle. Therefore, the hub the axle bolted to swung on an arc. At normal ride height, the camber is fine, but if you raise or lower them, you'll see the wheels moving. I've got a pic of my old dune buggy somewhere that shows the opposite effect. In 68, they released the IRS transaxle, which did away with the extreme camber issues, and handled much better on the road. It uses CV joints on both ends of the axleshafts, and the wheels swing straight up and down as the suspension cycles. Much more predictable on the road.

The original poster's picture that he linked to made me chuckle a little. It's a 68, but it's tucked, which shows the lengths people will go to to get that "stance." He's either modified the trailing arms or swapped in a swing axle trans to get the early-model tuck on a late-model pan. I couldn't do it. I drive my junk, and want to be able to pull corners.

Bugs are the ultimate project car.

If I didnt get into 4x4s i would have been a VW guy. My Dad has owned pretty much every single model they had from the 60's to early 80s. all air cooled. I really want to get a square back. I have loved those since my old roommate had one.

You see that green Squareback was on Ebay recently? Wow. :huggy:

My 17 year old daughter is coming down from Michigan to see me, I thought! See whats me to take her out to look for a bug, her first car! Got to love kids that like classic old cars. Man there are some really cool bug and I do like the slammed look.

oh ok i gotcha on the rear camber issue. so if you get a 68 or newer, you dont have the slanted tire effect on the rear correct? man i really want one now, but my yota needs a SFA. so after that i got my heart set on one. yall fellers got some nice ones. i seen one online that was slammed had stock wheels and had an airbrush paint job that made it look rusty. and heck, on this board, we cover up the rust with rattle cans lol

My last one... a 63. Sold it to fund some of the cost to buy Oliver's.

Good looking 63 dave, I used to be a judge for Walter at the Bug Bash's! Judged the shows from Va. to Miami!

If you want IRS it would be 69 and newer . check on the samba for cars .they have a good forum to let you know what you need to look for .

My bad! Looks like I was half-right this time. Well, much less than half-right. The auto-stick atrocities were IRS in 68, but all manuals were swing until 69. Oddly, though, I don't see a lot of 68 or 69 bugs around. All the late-models I see are 70-up.
