WARNING - Harlan County License Plate Crack Down - WARNING

well if its not street legal, insured and tagged, keep it off the road. Simple dmv rules. If you've got 20-30K in some of that junk then why can't you afford the tiny extra it would cost to make it legit.

Clearly you haven't read the thread or wheeled in Harlan. Up until the last year or so it was acceptible to drive your buggy into town and grab food. They want the money in the businesses there. It is something that draws people in to wheel there. Once you go you will realize that most of the nonlegal buggies are better and safer than the cars on the street.

While we were there a last weekend we had no problems. Not everyone was tagged, but the police didn't look twice. of course they were locals and we didn't see any state police in town. It was another great trip and I finally got to try a lot of trails since it was dry. Still got denied though.

I've been to Harlan a few times. Acceptable to drive on the road at one time or not, you still take a risk regarding liability, no matter what the town says......... no rig insurance, get umbrella coverage for your person if your worried about it. No vin # needed

If your willing to take the risk and open yourself up for a ticket or litigation that's your own choosing, I could care less, that's your own responsibility as an adult.... I'm just giving my thoughts.

My only care and concern is they stay open for a long time for future enjoyment..... I'll wheel right beside you non-tagged hooligans I don't discriminate!

Shouldn't you be working on your rig?:driver:

*cough* just um.... taking a break *cough* lol

well my trazer is a frankenstine of parts that i dont have titled or street legal but my Insurance will cover any thing i drive be it my buds z71 , Harley , or farmtractor if i wreck my own junk it is a loss for me but if i run over granny at the redlight it will fix her vehicle and pay her Med bills...so i'm cool there...just dont want to get a 150 buck ticket on streets i have been on for 2 years now riding in non street legal rigs. and yodaman88 your attitude sucks:flipoff2:
sounds like you need a volvo station wagon you liberal P.O.S.

That's ok for all them high dollar rigs I will sell u a vin plate and a clean title to make it seem legal to make him happy but last we heard in Harlan as long as it has headlights and tail lights or in between vehicles that you are with you were good in the town besides there is enough fourwheeler that ride on the streets to keep the cops happy instead of messing with us.

I thought you could get insurance and tags for even homemade dune buggies just take it to the tag office they will even give you a vin number for it, or assign it some kind of different status in the computer because it doesn't have one. I see those on the street all the time in knoxville. I have a non-tagged uninsured buggy and i have wheeled Harlan many times. When we need something we get in one of our pull trucks un-hook from the trailer and drive it to the store. If i can't drive my truck on the road here i don't want to drive it on the road there. All it would take is for somebody up there to decide to run into me and get hurt and there is no court in the world that would rule in my favor, not worth the risk to me

Where do you stay, and do you tow to the trailhead? Where do you park the tow rigs?

we always stay at some houses that are on the road to the trail head right next to the railroad tracks. They are owned by James White. So when we go to the trail head we have to drive through that neighborhood. We all just keep it slow and single file and pull over for any oncoming traffic, and we have never had any problems. Pretty much treat it like i do when i take my buggy down my neighborhood road. I'm not suppose to be there in the first place so i go out of my way to not impede on anybody coming the other direction. Any more we won't go if we can't stay at one of his 2 houses, we will just pick a different weekend. I can pm you his number if you want it.

That's what I thought about the guy doing a front dig in Buddy's Chevron parking lot the weekend we were there....tool bag pissing off all the local on lookers.

when was that ? all the locals that i have talked to up there have been very nice and seem to welcome us. i would hate to see that change

It happened a couple of weeks ago. It was disrespectful and the observance of more behavior like that could start to change attitudes. After a talk with Ken Crider, my friends and I realized the importance of being courteous to the town's citizens for the greater good of us all...ATV's, jeeps, buggies, whatever.

As to the topic, my vehicle will continue to stay registered and insured and would like to see clear laws posted so no one has any future issues.

the fellow who started this thread said nothing about someone being ticketed for going to the trail head. They were ticketed at a "retail parking lot" for no tags and so on. I hate the guy got a ticket but i was just saying you won't see me with my truck driving into town to get something. I treat it like it is my town and if i won't drive my truck a few miles down the road from my house i won't be doing it in Evarts either. I see where yodaman88 is coming from i would have just put it a little different. The law is the law i don't care if you have been doing it for a couple years or not, to me that just means you haven't gotten caught yet. just my 2 cents

I plan to simply tow to a spot on the mountain and camp there. I won't leave the trails unless I'm packed and ready to go home or the group I'm with wants to go to town. That means I spend less money in town, but I see no choice at this point.
