We adopted a dog yesterday!
We have 6 cats, and Jamie has always wanted a dog too, but we wanted to make sure it would get along with the cats (our house is not big enough for cats and dog to stay away from each other if they want to). We saw a dog on the http://labrescuenc.org website, and I went to see her at the Wake County animal shelter yesterday. 2-year-old female black lab, maybe slight mix with Golden Retriever. She was already fixed, got a rabies shot, and a micro-chip.
Took her home, and she is doing great, doesn't mess with the cats at all. Rode in the TJ for about 4 hours yesterday, and did fine. We'll be fencing part of our yard this weekend so she can get outside and play unattended. Her name is now Addy.
Here's a pic from when she was at the shelter:
If you are looking for a pet, I HIGHLY recommend you go to a shelter and check out the animals there. They had lots of dogs and cats, and I saw a rabbit too. I saw both mixed-breeds and "breed identifiable" like Lab, Doberman, Chow, small breeds, etc. Adult dogs and also puppies. It was REALLY hard not to come home with more than one dog. When I walked through all the cages to find Addy, there were all kinds of dogs perking up hoping I would pick them. And lots of the cats really wanted to go home too. The shelter folks check out the animals in terms of health and temperment for you, and you can spend time with the animals there to decide which one(s) you want.
Maybe once we get our fence built we'll go back for another dog. We're already maxed-out on cats.
