To ask, what do I use to clean bare metal for paint prep?

Soap and water? or something "stronger" like MEK or similar?

spray w/ brake clean or carb cleaner, then wipe down w/ a rag so it is clean and dry.

Water is ok if it is reeaally dirty and you need to get a tpo layer of grime off first, but not so much for the final prep.

And remember, several thin layers > 1-2 thick ones

yeah - oil and grease residue are really your biggest problems.

Although lets be honest, a well-used skid is gonna need repainting soon anyway.

I had that once, it burned...you can keep it.


To the OP...if it were me, I'd just paint it a bright color to enhance visibility. IMO, phrases are either played out (Like 'if you can read this, flip me over') or trying too hard to be cute and funny, and it's not...or it just makes you look like a jackass. Have some class, and let your wheeling do the talking, not your skid plate, unless that's not what you're looking for on your rig.


I'd go with chartreuse.

I say brillo it, let it sit for a couple days, brillo it again and clear coat it.

Ima go with bright pink...atleast the I wouldnt be the only one who likes pink on the bottom lol. But really never ask a 2yr old girl what color to paint anything that you dont want to be pink anyways lol
