I think this is in the right forum. what does everyone look for when they buy a cummins tow rig? i was looking at some 2006 or so 2500 srw 6 speed. i would love to have the ho but I dont see alot of them. so my question is what years are good? special options? what to avoid?

All the Cummins trucks from 2004.5 and up were HOs. There were no SO's in those years, so if you were looking at 06's they were high outputs.

Look for a maintenance record if there is one. A well maintained Cummins will last a long time.

HO? All or most that you will find around here from 2003 on will be HO. In 2003 it was 305 hp and went up to 325 hp in more recent years.

With the 3rd gen trucks (2003+), there isn't much to watch for. Ball joints are a weak point, but you can watch for excess play and replace them when necessary.

HO's only came with a six speed manuel in the early years 03-05

Mine 99 CTD dually has 253K runs great, and gets better MPG than my buddies 6.7L

do the 3rd gens have issues with autos and lift pumps and what not like some of the 2nd gens do?
I think the auto and the lift pump are fine as long as you don't tweak the engine output. The 48RE is a better tranny than the 47RE. You don't hear of a rash of lift pump issues, but when you do the owner has usually been running some type of a fueling box.

Lift pumps still fail occasionally. There just in tank now, and never fail when the tank is empty.
My 05 has been flawless. I'm up to 145K with the 6spd G56 box. There also was an NV5600 6 spd.
I've heard of injector issues on 03-04.5's
I'd look for one with higher than normal miles.
