What do you consider "good money?"

No offense to the OP, but I don't think anything good can come from a thread like this.

It's been my experience that generally when someone says this, then they really mean to offend but are trying to be nice about it. I take no offense to the statement, but since this thread is four pages deep now, what bad do you feel has come from it?

This thread has gone exactly like I thought it would for this site. There have been some exceptional answers that go much deeper than the monetary value asked for in my original post, which the members of this site are good for.

We haven't borrowed any money since 05 or so and I'm willing to bet our credit has suffered for it

That has been most surprising to me about retiring. I started slowing down work in '15, pretty well dropped all my remaining clients by January of this year (have one left). Everything is paid off. Since we bought the land in January and started the house in June, I have my watching my FICO score (on the NCSECU website) slowly drop month-to-month.

Two reasons given with the score....no long-term debt, and high balance on credit cards. BUT...I pay the cards off every month, down to zero. Hazards of developing land and building a house.... Put a few grand on each card each month, then pay it off when the statement comes. In the eyes of the credit card companies and FICO algorithm, that's bad. Even though my balance is 0.00 one day a month on every card...they look at the "average" balance.

But it doesn't matter....cash from here on out. Don't plan to finance anything ever again.

I know that is considered a neg but I never understood why.To me,as a creditor,that would be a positive.

My parents are almost retirement age and are still struggling. They both have worked and dad has always made good money as a diesel mech(about $23/hr now) but just haven't managed or something. My sister and her kids live next door and I suspect that's been some of the problem.I know they had their place paid for and borrowed against it to remodel and other things back in 06/07 and got caught up in all that mess in 08.Mom says its all due to medical bills and I'm sure they have some cause dad has plenty wrong w him,but at some point you gotta meet a max OOP??? I never get a real answer. Its enuf to make you wonder if dad spent it all on hookers and blow or if mom has a HSN addiction.I would just hate to know I was that age and still up against it.

Can I change my answer...guy in one of my wrenching groups just posted this. Good money is when I don’t bat an eye paying cash for this...yeah, that’s it.

I was taught to never discuss salary. To further complicate matters, there are at least three people from my work who frequent this site.

WTH?!?!? Are those condensers on the top 14" for the air conditioning? Are those changing rooms on the end? Or one changing room and one a blowjob room where he keeps the Asian masseuse

I don't understand how you would know what drawer has what tool! It'd take days to organize. And then days to find your 3/4 sockets!

would a masseuse be a gender neutral moose? just can't tell these days.

That's a great lesson taught by big companies to keep employees from being equally/fairly compensated.

You know, that's really food for thought. I've never liked discussing salary, it always causes unrest. But, you make a good point, unrest may be a good thing in that situation. If all of our assembly people knew what my area makes, they would probably be upset. They know we do better, but probably not that much better.

Actually got in an argument with my HR VP and CFO a couple months back...they were changing their policy that only HR had payroll rights and it was a privacy issue. My stance was the only privacy issue was them trying to cover up the padded salaries due to nepotism. I'm a huge advocate for damn near putting salaries right on peoples' nameplates. I lost that battle, but now they're doing the reporting I was, so no big loss.

I don't see anything wrong with it. It's an open ended question. Y'all overthinking it.

So, what would you do if you had a million dollars? :)

Deposit it in my E-trade account, invest it wisely, and retire earlier than currently planned.

Where my wife works they accidentaly mailed all the hourly folks a copy of the salary folks benefits package. There were a few suprises in there.

It really is food for thought. The company I work for is a publicly traded company and we were recently bought out so they had to post the compensation packages for senior management in the SEC paperwork (100's of pages that probably very few actually bothered to read). There were definitely some surprises in there! On a personal level, I've found the only real way to find out if you are compensated competitively is to go out and do some interviewing and get an offer or two. Alternatively, you could talk to a recruiter. They are typically willing to share the salary range for a particular position to see if it is a good fit for your expectations and experience level.

Funny, I find that I must be overpaid. I can't seem to find a job paying the same! Lol

My pay is funded by tax dollars, so while it may not say "Duane's salary is $XX,XXX" specifically, it's not hard to figure out what it is. Hell, it was posted clearly on the job notice what the salary would be for the position I just accepted.

Sexist is what that is...here I am flaunting the goods and all I can get is 85 cents on the dollar and 'tuck your nuts back in to you skirt'

My company publishes pay range for each department each year as well as benefit packages. They go above and beyond to show all they can without blatantly saying "so and so makes xxxxx per year". It keeps drama down.

My company just this year started doing the same "Position -- Job Description -- Pay Range"

That's pretty much what mine does, but they show the benefits as well.
