You are in Mnt City Tn (Yesterday) you have wheeled all day, it's getting dark, it's getting colder, it's raining, and the Alternator on your tow rig (12V) goes out.

My solution:

I took my extension cable for my Ready Welder and hooked it into my Jeep( I have a perminate plug in ) It can be used for 12V or 24V depending on how I run the isolators (only the 12v can charge as I use it) I run the cord up the side of my Jeep, which is now on the trailer, across the tongue, in through the back window, and use the Ready Welder supplied battery clamps to clamp it onto my power inverter, which go directly to my Van batteries under the hood. With the Jeep running the whole way home and the throttle up enough to charge everything, Wah-lah, 12V that is enough to run the lights, windshield wipers, and defrost fan enough to get me back home.

Nice job chip! But some of us run 2 alternators

Now that is thinking. Good job. Now where are the pics so we know it is true ;) :) How many hours did you have to drive like that?

My drive is about 2 1/2 hours. No pics, but plenty of witnesses LOL

You would think I would have a spare, but given the situation, I wasn't really wanting to stand around in the rain. Two batteries, hmmm maybe 2 alternators might be the ticket

Sounds like you'd had enough time off to dream up this incredible scenario and work out the details in your head to tell us a whopper of a story.....I don't buy it....

j/k :poop: Shit like that is true cuz you couldn't make it up if you wanted too....

:driver:.......

Now....
if the tow rig were deisel...
Couldn't you just get it started, then you don't really need an alternator anymore (except for light/wipers/heat...)?

Not on mine. 05' F350 needs an alternator to run. Atleast on the 6.no powerstroke.

Yup I have done that on my Dodge...

His van would have run just fine for quite a while on just the batt if it hadn't had to run the lights and wipers. If it were a first gen 12v cummins or older diesel, it would just need power for the fuel cutoff.

glad you made it back to the house. i think i would spend time in the rain before i paid for gas for two trucks all the way back to the house.

Ordinarily I would have, but.
Since I had my surgery I don't have the circulation in my arms and hands like I did, since they robbed them of spare parts! Add to that I think Boone would have been the closest parts store, aaaand, due to being out of work, funds would have been stretched to buy a replacement. so, I did what I had to do with what I had. truth be told, I probably shouldn't have even made the trip up to begin with. I did consider staying the night and coming home in daylight, I had all I needed, food my bed in the van, and even heat, but they were calling for snow, so I decided to make the trip on home.

won't work Mike.
My Alternator is a 15V 100 amp big mamajama.

Now though not related to this thread:

I had posted once that my volt meter read 15.3 volts. Someone said it should be burning up batteries and so on.
So, if it come from the factory like this...........please someone clear this up for me

15.3 is fine the alt doesnt have enough power to boil a batt without getting the volts around 20-21.

An alt putting out 12v will never charge a 12v battery... It would be like trying to freeze an entire lake with ambient temps right at 32F....

Well I lucked up. My Bro n Law has a savage yard and he had an alternator. It come off of a 90 Mark IV. Same 15V and 100 amp. Was a Reman, so not sure of anything else about it other than it works. Had to change the pulleys out though, it had a serpentine type. So once again, the Van can go it alone(without the Jeep to power it)
