Been dealing with low batteries in the crew for the last couple weeks, they finally gave up the ghost last week. One tested fine, just needed a good charge but the other was cooked. Picked up one new 34/78 Diehard at Advance; as much as I hate piece-mealing things, both of these are gonna be replaced before next winter with a set of AGMs.
Swapped in the new, cleaned and checked all my cables, turned the key and
Nothing.
Turns out, direct drive starters don't like trying to turn over a high-compression diesel engine with low voltage; who'da thunk it? I did an autopsy on the old Oreilly's reman, after 4 years of faithful service, I think me putting 24V to it trying to test it finished it off.
Spent some money. Got a new Powermaster gear reduction starter; these are the cat's ass for 6.5s and 6.2s, and I fully believe it!
Cleaned up all the ARP hardware before swapping it in,
Had to solder a new end on the ignition trigger wire, but once everything was put together all I had to do was tickle the key after one cycle on the glowplugs and it coughed to life with a big cloud of smoke after sitting stone dead for over a week!
Going to do an oil and fuel filter change tomorrow, then a wash and good solid interior cleaning on Sunday,
